Description of Services

With over twenty years of experience in Family Law, Drew Peterson currently has a limited family practice only, primarily limited to family mediation, "unbundled legal services", and family legal issues that do not involve contested custody. Alaskans are fortunate (although caution is advised) to have a legislatively approved "Dissolution" procedure, allowing parties to terminate their marriages without the necessity of attorneys under some circumstances, notably when they are in agreement on the legal issues involved in the dissolution (custody, support, property division, etc.). For parties who are unable to agree on such terms, we recommend family mediation as a more human and less expensive first alternative to a contested divorce. It is our belief that mediation should be attempted in every case prior to litigation, although where there are serious issues of domestic violence, mental illness, or substance abuse involved, or similar concerns, parties are advised to discuss such issues with the mediator prior to the initial mediation session to insure that appropriate and adequate safeguards are in place.
