6 Strategies for Surviving the Holidays as a "Suddenly Single"
(provided by Heidi M. Day, "Suddenly Single" Life Coach)
1. Get an Attitude of Gratitude- As a "Suddenly Single" it's easy to focus on what is wrong with your life during the holidays. But it is when you are at your lowest that gratitude is most important. Begin a gratitude journal. Find perfection in something everyday. It might be as simple as the way your cat snuggles on your lap. Make it a point to write down at least one thing that is perfect everyday. Soon you will begin creating your Perfect Life!
2. Don't over do it-Exercise Extreme Self Care- set boundaries, eat healthy, rest, and pamper your self. Avoid using food, alcohol or drugs to cope with holiday stress. This way of coping leads to depression, low self-esteem and a greater sense of isolation and despair.
3. Be Definitive about your plans- Much of that angst that you feel comes from not knowing what to expect. Sit the kids down and make plans so that everyone will know what they can expect. When everyone is informed it removes false expectations and lessens the pressure to recreate the past.
4. Survive the emotions- Allow yourself the luxury of tears if needed, but even through your tears know that joy comes in the morning. Remember that this is a holiday SEASON, which means this too shall pass. Keep in mind that all negative things that are related to this season are temporary and that which is really right in your life lasts forever.
6. Create New Traditions- Don't try to exactly recreate the holidays of the past. Try something new. Here's one example: Christmas ornaments can be very sentimental and that might be nostalgia that you are not ready for this year. So throw a Tree Trimming Party- and ask all guests to bring one ornament to help you celebrate your new "Suddenly Single" life.
