I am a licensed therapist with extensive experience working with couples and families. Over the past ten years, I have helped couples struggling to keep their "coupleness" during stressful times. I have also helped couples who have decided to separate do so with a minimum of emotional damage to them and to other family members. In couples counseling, I help the partners identify and understand the dynamics of their conflicts, their triggers, the process of escalation, and obstacles to flowing communication. I also work with the couple on understanding underlying emotional reasons for relationship conflicts. Such issues may be different emotional needs, different styles of expressing feelings, as well as individual issues emerging from each partners life experience. An important part of the process for most of my clients in couples and separation counseling is communication skills coaching. By acquiring these skills, the partners learn talk to each other in a non-blaming way, make requests, and express and negotiate needs, while learning active listening skills. Some client come to counseling after having decided that separation is the best solution, or that it is inevitable. In separation and divorce counseling, the basic premise is that the intimate relationship is over, but that an amicable separation will benefit the divorcing couple and their children. In the long run, better communication and negotiating skills save money and prevent further hurt. I help the couple modulate their resentment and focus on problem solving. I also guide the couple in how to address the separation and divorce with their children, assuring the children that the divorce is not their fault, and helping the parents support their kids through the process of grief over the loss over their family as they knew it. I also help the parents negotiate schedules for children's visits and stays.
