- What are your goals?
- What mediation approach to you prefer?
- Assess your abilities, strengths and weaknesses
- What is your timeframe?
- What is your budget?
- Ask people and professionals whom you know
- Look at directories
- Call referral services
- Fees: Hourly? Daily? Overall estimate?
- Education: How much? Where? How recent?
- Experience: What kinds of disputes? How many? For how long?
- Insurance: Coverage? What kind?
- Professional memberships? Adherence to ethical standards?
- What ethical standards apply?
- Confidentiality explained?
- What style of mediation?
- More information on training and experience?
- Logistics: Scheduling, written agreements?
- How much will this cost?
- Violence or abuse concerns?
- How does the information about the mediator fit with your own needs?
- Did you feel good about the mediator's ability to understand you, to be neutral, to be respectful?
- Can you afford the services?
- Can the mediator work within your time frame?
- Will the other party agree to this mediator?
