Both the period of time alimony is to be paid and the amount to be paid can be modified by a court. The one major exception to this is if the parties agree that the alimony is not subject to court modification.

The Court can award alimony to either party on a Complaint for Alimony or as part of an action for Annulment or Divorce. 

In Maryland, when awarding alimony, the Court must consider all factors necessary for a fair and equitable award.

In Maryland, alimony is typically awarded for a period of rehabilitation until the spouse receiving alimony can be expected to become self-supporting through education, training or work experience.

If alimony is awarded by the Court, keep in mind that it is modifiable upon request of either party until the termination date specified by the Court

Alimony can be received by a person getting a divorce in Maryland in one of two ways-either the divorcing couple can agree that one person will pay the other alimony, or a court can order a party to pay alimony. Contrary to popular belief, alimony can be awarded to either a woman OR a man.

Either party may claim alimony or spousal support from the other based upon a great variety of factors that affect the equities of the case, such as the respective income, needs and resources of the parties.
