Deadbeat Parents: Court Remedies:
(Provided by: Divorce Source, Inc. Staff)
On a local level, the courts that granted the divorce - the court of original jurisdiction - can issue a bench warrant and arrest of a parent who fails to pay support, but this is usually a last resort because jailing a payor means the deadbeat pays nothing. Moreover, it may jeopardize future payments because jailing the deadbeat puts his job at risk. In addition to garnishments, other child support enforcement tools include attachments, which are liens against property, and security or bonds, which are guarantees of future payment.

Some jurisdictions have other remedies that include, in addition to jailing the delinquent parent, suspension or revocation of driver's license or professional licenses and seizure of bank accounts, lottery winnings, tax refunds, a personal injury and workers compensation award.
