- Check the furnace, plumbing and all appliances. Check to see if there are enough electrical outlets and lights. Be sure that the wiring is sufficient to handle several appliances.
- Are storm windows, screens, and shades provided?
- Are the floors solid, walls painted, and are there any cracks visible?
- Are the doors, windows, and entrances to the building secure? Is the entrance safe and well lighted? Is there a quick escape in case of fire?
- Is the apartment quiet? What surrounds the apartment?
- Is there any evidence of insects or rodents? Who will pay for extermination?
- Ask others in the complex or neighborhood about their experiences. Be sure to ask more than just one tenant.
- If the apartment is furnished, be sure to have it inspected and have a statement of condition signed by you and the landlord.
