Surviving Divorce & Separation: Renting: Tips for Renting an Apartment:
(Provided by: Divorce Source, Inc. Staff)
Before looking at apartments or houses, evaluate your living needs: number of rooms, location, distance from shopping and public transportation, price and facilities.
Consider the Following Before Renting:
  • Check the furnace, plumbing and all appliances. Check to see if there are enough electrical outlets and lights. Be sure that the wiring is sufficient to handle several appliances.

  • Are storm windows, screens, and shades provided?

  • Are the floors solid, walls painted, and are there any cracks visible?

  • Are the doors, windows, and entrances to the building secure? Is the entrance safe and well lighted? Is there a quick escape in case of fire?

  • Is the apartment quiet? What surrounds the apartment?

  • Is there any evidence of insects or rodents? Who will pay for extermination?

  • Ask others in the complex or neighborhood about their experiences. Be sure to ask more than just one tenant.

  • If the apartment is furnished, be sure to have it inspected and have a statement of condition signed by you and the landlord.
