Surviving Divorce & Separation: Filing for Divorce: Looking for a Lawyer:

Choosing a lawyer is like choosing a doctor. The smart shopper looks for a specialist.

Attorney fees are a factor. Call around and compare rates. Beware of "bargains". Hire a good lawyer, one who specializes in divorce, is licensed by the bar in your state, and has experience. Forget about your cousin the real estate lawyer who hasn't even practiced since he hit the lottery years ago. Hire a currently practicing expert in divorce.

You are about to undo the most serious relationship of your life. Do it with the help of a qualified and reputable person. He or she may very well become the most important new relationship in your life for a long time to come, at least until your divorce is final, so choose wisely. Be sure you feel able to express your concerns with this person.

When you meet for the first time, you are interviewing the prospective lawyer and he or she is assessing your case. Either of you can decide you don't make a good match. If your attorney gives you the creeps during your first consultation, then use your time wisely to gather as much information as possible and find another lawyer. After your first consultation you should feel comfortable with this person. The chemistry needs to click - if it doesn't feel right, get someone else! lf you are afraid or intimidated and cannot ask questions, look for another lawyer.
