Surviving Divorce & Separation: Moving Process: Moving Checklist:

Take inventory of everything that you will be moving.

Separate everything that you plan on selling, throwing out, or giving away.

If you are hiring professional movers, be sure to get a several estimates from different moving companies and schedule eight weeks in advance.

Be sure to be specific in describing your move to the different companies; be consistent so that the cost is not a lot higher than expected.

Contact your insurance agent to transfer your coverage (both homeowners and automobile). If you need to establish a new homeowners account you should consider doing so prior to the move.

Select medical professionals in your new area. They may not be permanent, but will be available in case of an emergency.

Contact your pediatrician, dentist, veterinarian or other professionals to have records transferred.

Arrange with schools to get your child(ren)'s school records.

Consider putting your valuables, like jewelry in a safe deposit box until the move is completed.

Be aware of closing bank accounts and have money readily available. Travelers checks are always an option.

Pack a separate bag full of the things you may need in transit or for your first night at your new home.

Pack a small tool box for last minute needs.

Pick up dry cleaning that may still be at the cleaners.

Have any house maintenance arrangements discontinued if it is in your name. ( lawn care, snow removal, etc.)

Pack a box with important papers or documents you may need.

When everything is packed, make your final check around the house.

Always have directions prepared to your new home for helpers or professional movers.

Advise the neighbors that you are moving.
