What, exactly, did you give up in order for DAD to attend classes and improve himsef?
As for what to say when confronted with such a thing is simply, "that is between your father and I, neither of us should discuss it with children...hey, lets have some pie..." and direct the child away from it. Do not give it CREEDENCE, do not give it "air time", simply refuse to discuss it and shift the focus to something else.
