How long does it take for 1st check?

I just got the order yesterday that my stbx is to start paying cs on May 1st. I was wondering once he pays how long it takes for me to receive the check? I was told the 1st payment will be by check and the rest will be put on a debit card which I assume means quicker turnaround.
