Re: Medical Benefits

What state do you live in? What kind of freelance work do you do?

Even if you husband could cover you now, he can't do so after the divorce is finalized. He can cover his children, tho, & you should certainly stipulate this in your agreement. This is especially important since you say your daughters have pre-existing health problems.

You could stipulate that your husband will repay you for the premiums on your own health ins., but if you can't find anyone willing to sell you a policy, or if your pre-existing conditions are not covered, such a stipulation would be worthless even if your ex agreed to it.

If you can document your disability, start ASAP. Your could be eligible for federal benefits. If you can't document that you're disabled, you may have to get a job, w/ chronic pain syndrome or w/o it. Can you expand your freelance work into a fulltime job? Could someone in your church find you a job w/ benefits that not too physically demanding?

Vermont & Massachusetts offer health ins. to adults who aren't covered by employers, Medicare or Medicaid. Vermont & Maine offer coverage for almost all uninsured children. California is considering a statewide universal health ins. system. You best bet may be to move to a state where health care is part of the social safety net. But research carefully before you move.

Altho you say you still love your husband, you sound very bitter in this & other forums. If he feels that you're going to shut him out of the chiildren's lives, he may be reluctant to extend their ins. policies when they go off to college. Even if he did you dirt, he is still your kids' father; I hope you want him to be a caring, involved father. Vent all you want on this forum, but try to keep your bitterness out of your kids' lives. Why would he want to contribute to their ins. costs a minute longer than he has to, unless he's still involved in their lives?
