Drew, I imagine it depends on the circumstances. I do not compare every divorce settlement or the process to mine. Sorry if settling all propery and debt at teh final hearing seems inconceivable to your situtation. In my case, it was quite easy to do at the time of the final hearing. Getting the finacial info I needed to be able to come to a fair agreement was the problem for me. Getting all of the debt and financial info from my EX is what made it take so long... that and the fact that I tried to do as a dissolution for 20 months. At 20 months, I filed for divorce. I think my EX finally realized it was best to come to terms and have it go forth as an uncontested divorce. I think he realized Iwas being more fair than the judge might be. Mine was a long term, 30 year marriage. Our son and only child was 23 and on his own. Our home was paid for. It came down to decisions on if one of us would buy out the others equity in the house, or sell it and split the $$$. Splitting our pensions, IRA's etc. How to handle our debt. Our debt amounted to what we each owed on our cars, and what we each owed on our individual charge cards. We had agreed on splitting of possessions. After a marriage of that duration, almost everything we had was a marital asset. |
