I would talk directly to the director. Normally I like to bring problems to the person causing it, but I question this teacher's intelligence if she makes it known she is dating a parent AND believes trashing his ex is appropriate playground conversation.
It is inappropriate for the teacher to talk around children that way but it is also inappropriate for a teacher to talk around other parents that way about a different parent.
The parents are her clients. I think the fact that the children might overhear her is less important than the fact that she is trashing one client in front of the others.
If a child overhears, the biggest danger is that it will eventually get back to the parent. Which will embarrass the teacher. At least I hope she would have the sense to be embarrassed.
But if I were the director of the school, I would think that the bigger problem is that a teacher who is a "gossiper" and who trashes one parent in front of the others, will lose the confidence of the other parents. Now if your child is in counseling, would you want to tell that teacher? If you are going through a divorce, would you want to tell that teacher? If the parents believe that the their child's teacher is the school's Ms. 411, then it will hurt her effectiveness as a teacher. If I were the director, I would put a stop to it immediately.
I would have to admit that if I were evaluating preschools, considering where I would place my child next year or where I would place my next child, that teacher's behavior would encourage me to consider other schools.
