We are (very recently) ex-military and I can tell you how hard it is to make long distance situations work if both parents aren't willing to make it work. A guy I work with was in the same boat, but he and his ex work very well together at it. Even though this is the case for them he only gets to see his daughter a few times a year and they both have a VERY hard time with it and he says by time their daughter adjusts it's time to send her back again.
I wouldn't recommend it to any parent if it's not necessary!
