I refinanced when I divorced and of course it is harder to qualify with half the income. Most people live much closer to their income edge that we did. So when I had to pay the bills alone I still was able to do it. A good rule of thumb is that they won't lend you an amount where the monthly payment is over 1/3 your gross pay.
