Several months ago I moved out of my primary residence. (This was at the recommendation of the police, due to my wife's violent attacks on me.) I have continued to pay the mortgage, auto insurance on both my wife's cars, and virtually every bill related to the house, even though I'm not living in the house. Today, after months of refusing to be reasonable about the property issues ---and refusing mediation--- my wife filed for divorce and vowed to "annihilate" me. I no longer feel I should pay for her Internet access, HBO, telephone, et al. She's not currently employed, but she wrote herself a check for over $40,000 from our Home Equity Line Of Credit and deposited it in her private bank account, so she should have no problem paying the utilities. (I've even been paying $335 a month in interest for that underhanded maneuver.) Is it OK for me to discontinue paying for my incredibly vindictive future ex's utility bills while I'm holed up in a relative's spare bedroom? Any repercussions I have to worry about? I mean... I wouldn't disconnect the electricity without informing her but... Could this come back to bite me? Thanks Lost in Las Vegas |

I would stop paying it since you will likely be hit with the monthly bill for the home equity loan! Since you KNOW she isn't penniless, stop paying and let her learn how to manage that money. |

My opinion is this: if you have PROOF that can be shown to a court that she got that $40k and you have receipts from all the stuff you've been paying, I say STOP. Atleast if you have all the proof you can show any judge that you DID support her when you thought she wasn't able to, but now that she CAN you stopped so that you can begin to support yourself rather than letting a relative. I'm assuming there are no kids since you didn't mention any. If there were that would change things |
