Divorce and the IRS - is proof of divorce required

My wife and I divorced this year. Previously we filed joint returns with the IRS.

Now that we're divorced, we will use the single filing status for 2009.

Do we have to submit proof to the IRS that we are divorced?

Thank you for your responses.

Googledad,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you know how the IRS verifies if a previously married couple is actually divorced? Court records, etc.?

Thanks,

Bob

They don't . There would only be a problem if the filing status don't match up , for example one spouse files married filing seperately while the other lists single .
