Honestly, I think you are making a very poor choice financially. -------------------------------------------
Considering he lives in NYC...where one of my closest friends lives and I believe he pays $3500 plus for a small 2 bdrm apartment. I did a quick search and a 2 bdrm can be over $4000/month, at approx. 1000 sq. ft. With the economy in the rut and job security at an all time low...well it may not be such a "poor choice financially".

If he were unemployed, he would be making a good choice. But he's not. He is employed. And makes more than what he will make by enlisting.
Which is his choice, but it is extremely likely that he will not get a reduction in child support because of his voluntary choice to reduce his income.
Just like I wouldn't get an increase in child support (I live in an income share state where my income is used in calculations) should I voluntarily reduce my income.
And to be honest, that is the way it should be.

I would normally agree- although not all judges impute. In a 7 year span BM was imputed once, then after that she was not imputed again. Her income went from $25k to $9k, which didn't even include FT employment.
Nonetheless, in the OP's case his rent could be 50% or more of his income, where he currently lives.
Let's not forget when you are a NCP (which is why I wish parents could each be as CP and a NCP for an extended amount of time) you are essentially paying for TWO households. His own (where the child probably resides for a % of time) and the CP's household.
In the end choosing a lower paying job, that will benefit everyone long-term could be considered choosing wisely. I wonder how judges in this particular area (and hit hard by the economy) would rule.

The OP stated his current CS is 50% of his income and his income is going to be reduced 50%. Without a reduction (which he would never get in my state for a voluntary change) he's going to be broke for years and years and years.....

Yes without a reduction, yes, but I don't know that he would not get a reduction due to enlisting in the military? I think he needs to seek the advice of a lawyer first and foremost. Like I said BM was imputed only for the first time and then never again. If he enlists and stays in the military for a long period of time I don't think it will be an issue.
