...next year, LOL.
Our Six Flags runs about $50 a day to get in (which is weird, cause it is only $55 for a season pass, so if you are going, get a season pass and you can park for free as well. It normally costs ten dollars to park, LOL)
Still, when you consider $50 per person for a WHOLE day of fun at the park, it is really reasonable.
But google theme park accidents. Lots of accidents are caused from faulty equipment or unknown health conditions. It's a risk to ride them.
The "accidents" then, are caused by the health issue....not by the amusement park. Kind of like the boy on the news's accident was caused by his own stupidity....not by the amusement park. That's not to say that it's not a complete tragedy, but I grew up in an area with numerous RR crossings, and idiots used to die all the time from being careless. The news stories were always something overly dramatic like, "Yet ANOTHER Death By Train!" Uh. No. "Death By Moron?" Yes. The news media likes to overblow stories to get people to tune in/buy their rag/forward their story, so they make it as HUGE as humanly possible, and present it in such a way that they can feed from it for days.
The "risk" is getting out of bed in the morning. I worry more about my daily commute, and the people who are allowed licenses after 2 or 3 DUI's and numerous speeding tickets.....and the HUGE line I always see at McDonalds when I drive by, and the increasing cholesterol in all of those vehicles.
Anyway....
We're actually taking a group of 8 - 14 year olds to an amusement park tomorrow. The tickets are BOGO. Woot!!!!

Hey I'm not blaming Six Flags for this one! Sorry if it came off that way. I just couldn't believe we were there the day before. But there are plenty of cases where the park WAS at fault and there is always a risk no matter what happens. There are just a bunch of teenagers running these rides. Nobody should even be WEARING hats based on the "no loose articles" rules. Last week before this happened my friend and her two kids went and all three lost hats on rides. I asked her why in the world would you wear a hat on a rollercoaster?!?! And I guess it would not feel good getting hit across the face from someone ELSE'S hat flying through the air either. She said to look on the ground....there are THOUSANDS of hats lying there. Also, what if someone in a car next to you decides to try to lift the bar, or what if someone on the ride got seriously injured or killed from this fellow's head! The risk is not only the rides...but other people's mistakes.
And the chances of it happening....well...if anything will happen it will happen to ME based on past experience. I'm not the luckiest person in the world. And lots of big and little injuries could occur. We saw a girl stick her hand in the water on Thunder River splashing her friends...not the smartest move either. One little girl got lost from her family at Skull Island...one scared Mom there!
I don't like being at the mercy of other people. But I have always loved the rides. But the older I get, the less I find them fun. Same with swimming in the ocean. I grew up in the ocean. But now, I think too much about sharks. Getting old sucks...

...in Arlington two years ago. Did Six Flags four days and Hurricane Harbor one (Six Flags sister water park).
Okay, TEN kids (in TENTS) FOUR days at the park, only ONE injury. Daughter was running down some steps (which contained numerous signs stating NO RUNNING...I called her a dumbass) and twisted her ankle. Nothing but a minor sprain. The park medical folks ace bandaged it, and GAVE her a wheel chair, as well as an orange bracelet which allowed her and the folks that were WITH her to go IN the EXIT of EACH ride, and go RIGHT to the front, and they could ride it as many times as they wanted without getting off.
Funny thing is, ALL OF A SUDDEN, she became the MOST popular of ALL the kids, and ALL the kids wanted to push her around the park in her chair. I am SURE they were just concerned for her safety, LOL. Although I cannot criticize, there were a few rides I wanted to go on, but the line was too long. But because she was my DAUGHTER, I felt that I should take my turn behind her chair. Coincidently, she wanted to ride those SAME rides, so I SUFFERED and took her on them, LOL.

I'm actually REALLY looking forward to tomorrow. I haven't been on rides in YEARS. Honestly? Because I was too fat, and they were VERY uncomfortable. Just...fitting in them and stuff. I hated the ones where the bar clicks until it meets you.....especially if there was someone else using the same bar. I felt like they weren't safe to ride with me. Not to mention the force of being thrown around the corners was horrible feeling. That's a lot of momentum!
Anyway....I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is risk in pretty much everything, it is up to the individual to mitigate it. You can eliminate it in some things, such as rides at amusement parks, but unless you don't need a car fro anything, you can try to manage that risk, is it safer to drive at 8 in the morning on saturday or 11 at night on Friday, do you leave in the morning or try to drive through the night. It is possible to decrease risk, but the bottom line is that you cannot eliminate it totally from your life.
Its a tragedy that this boy died, he could have prevented it, and it really sounds like the only way the amusement park can eliminate all risk for its customers is to shut down.

RJ,
Teens DO run the rides, however it's not as simple as "Here is the ride, this is what you do, have fun." First of all, every ride operator must have a drivers license. Then there are 2 tests for each ride . One is the attendants test. Yes you have to be tested to check lap bars and direct people to their cars. You have to know what to look for such as no single riders in the back seat, ask children who look deathly afraid if they really want to ride. (You'd be surprised at the number of parents who force their kids to get on the coasters). And to listen for peole who say they want to get off while still in the stations. Even if they are screwing around out they go. Then to operate the ride itself there is another seperate test that covers everything from where to insert the key to where the emergency stop button is located to the proper way to unload passengers in an emergency situation. There are cameras at various points on a lot of rides that have monitors in the control booths. They are located in the blind spots where an attendant on the floor can't see what's happening. (I doubt that covers restricted areas though, since the cameras are covering areas where the guests are "suppossed to be." )The rides are walked every day by a mechanic and twice each shift by a ride lead. There are various check offs and believe me if you forget to initial one of them you will be demoted. It's also not just 2 tests, it's 2 test for every single ride you are certified to run.
I'm not trying to convince you that you should ride the major coasters,I just wanted to let you know that there are a lot of precaustions taken. And for the record there has never been a death at the Six Flags in IL.
