My incisions and stomach are REALLY hurting...I'm on lortabs, but they keep me AWAKE. It's Saturday morning, DS is at SO's parents and I've been up since 6am...didn't to go bed til after midnight. I'm a napper - couldn't even nap yesterday after the surgery.
I don't know what to do, it's driving me insane.

Well, you should be taking 1-2 lortab q4-6 hours most likely. Did you get a prescription for a docusate also? You should be taking a stool softener so as not to aggravate your abdomen when you take a dump.

What's a docusate?
She said if by day 2 I haven't had a bowel movement...to get some laxitives. So far I haven't..been taking tums though to help some.

Docusate is a stool softener. You should have probably got a prescription from the start for one. If you don't have a BM, you'll probably need to get some bisacodyl.

Thanks - I don't usually have any issues w/ BM's :). Any suggestions on a good over the counter one? I'll send SO this morning.
I'll probably call the nurse's station today and get some ideas to, maybe also for something to help me sleep.

The problem is, the lortab will work against you having a bowel movement, Narcotics have a constipating affect.

Yeah that's what the dr. said, so I expected it. I'll probably get some over the counter laxatives as she suggested - my main annoyance now is sleep :)

This could be a tricky equation, enough to sleep and a laxative, hmmmmmm.
I would ask if you should get a stool softener or a laxative. The issue with the bowel movement sounds like it has to do with muscles used during. The softener sounds like it will decrease the amount of strength needed and make it easier, the laxative sounds like it will make you go when you can't. I could be wrong, but spinner, give me some knowledge.........

Just to clarify - a stool softener is different from a laxative. Stool softeners do exactly what they sound like. You probably had one (like colace or something) after you gave birth. My doctor prescribed it to me anyway. They are very gentle.
Laxatives on the other hand cause muscle contractions in your bowels to force everything out. I found that using them can be quite painful even when I am NOT recovering from abdominal surgery. So be careful. Your doctor would probably not want you taking a laxative OTC.

I would recommend something like Miralax. Pretty good stuff. Even helps my chiweenie go potty. :-)
I can't believe how bad you seem to be hurting. Maybe they did a bigger incision on you or something? I hope you feel better soon. And if I were you, I would take 3 Benedryl and call someone in the morning. :p

Thanks BL - SO got me some nyquil and I was able to nap.
There are 2 incisions, one in/under the belly button, and one about 5 inches lower - did you have two?
I'm also still bloated w/ the gas and look slightly pregnant - awwwwe :)

They did a vag-assisted lap so I only had one incision. With my hysterectomy, they were nice enough to give me 3 scars. But, they are not even noticeable now.
As for the Mexican food? NO. You get gas right now? OUCH. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get some gas pills to help you get some of that air out of your belly. It is going to take some time, because it is more in your belly than gas is. I started passing it as soon as I left the hospital, even though it hurt like an SOB, but I felt SOOOOO much better when it was about 3/4 of the way gone that night.

It's started passing SOME - I've been taking tums and Maalox (sp?).
But still no bowel movements!
I'm assuming the incisions were one for the laparoscopy, one for the hysteroscopy? I don't know.

Thanks Buckeye - not really...I have IBS, usually it's never an issue to "go."

He's in bed. DS is at my parents tonight. SO had an alumni softball game w/ the guys today, buddies from his fraternity in college - the alumns played the guys who are in college now - so needless to say he got home w/ a few drinks in him and is now asleep :). We watched "I love you, man" - STUPID STUPID movie btw. Then he crashed. He works all day tomorrow.

I wasn't going to. SO's parents picked him up yesterday and kept him last night and today. SO was at his softball game and I finally fell asleep, so mom just went to his parents house to pick him up. I told her she could bring him home, but she wanted to keep him (which doesn't happen often)..so she's bringing him home tomorrow. Wanted me to rest. My mommy spoils me when I'm sick :)
She knew I had it scheduled b/c it was supposed to be his dad's weekend, so she wanted to help. I'm very lucky to have the help I have.

I didn't sleep a wink last night either. It's either old age, menopause, being jacked up from a late night cleaning spree, or I drank that 5 hour energy drink a little too late. I pissed my cat off too because I couldn't settle down. I'm actually drinking a cup of coffee right now for my headache...and I think I'll still be able to fall asleep with noooooo problems tonight. I am so tired.

I was always a big sleeper until I got old and started having some insomnia. Just wait...it's all downhill after 40. I have never been so high maintenance in my life with all the weight fluctuations to keep in check, plucking the things on my chin that poke out seemingly overnight, constantly coloring the grey hair, getting creative with makeup as a coverup. I mean damn...what the hell is going on here. :) I asked my Mom today if I was 42 or 43 or 44...I seriously couldn't remember. So add memory loss to the equation and being blind as a bat...it's all over. You just wait...enjoy it while you've got it! :)

The gas is one reason for the bloat and the sore tummy is from them "jumping" on you to get the gas out. Feeling like a bunch of linebackers jumped on you???
Don't forget that on about day 4, you will feel a lot worse. Take your pain meds, go to bed and know when you wake up the next day, you will feel so much better.

You need to move around to get rid of the gas. Every patient I have who get some form of laproscopic/open surgery has gas build up, and I tell them to get off their asses and walk around.
