The economy here
      #774648 - 01/17/12 10:42 AM

is really starting to tank. Another factory is moving to Mexico. They moved here 5 years ago, got all kinds of tax free this and that. Now that it is time to start paying taxes, they pack up and move, 300 people have just been given their pink slip.
Places are just closing up right and left.
Talk to my banker buddy, well because I am starting to panic a little too. He said we are still above water, much better off than 1/2 the business's in town.

I know they keep saying we have less people on unemployment, but are they counting the ones that have not found work and the UE bennies have run out?

Even the mini mart that I go to, is not seeing the sales as far as that misc. stuff people buy. Just buying gas.

This evening I am going to a NFIB meeting. Never been to a meeting, been a member for years...so I guess we will see what they have to say?

There probably are less people on unemployment, benefits only last so long. The people that file new claims, and the people they stop counting gives you one set of numbers. That is very different than the number of people looking for jobs who cannot find them.

Our area keeps talking that there will be 900 job openings in our region opening up in the next 3 months. Something about more retailers opening up, yet aren't a bunch closing? Sears? Kmart? GAP? I really feel like no one really has "job security" anymore.

Here in the Peoria area things are looking really good. Caterpillar pretty much owns this area. I think most job posted these days are specific enough that most people with say high school diplomas can't apply. Like in health care. They won't just hire anyone. My DH is an engineer and they need lots of people like around 150..but you need to be an engineer so most of those drawing unemployment can't apply.
I have a good friend who sells houses..she told me a year ago the the housing market is going to crash again either this year or next..cant remember which..she said it will be worse then in 2008...more arms coming due then last time..she said if you thought the banks got hit big last time..you just wait..doesn't sound good at all..

Do you know what normal starting pay is for a basic factory job is?

Then I wonder with housing/construction being down...are people buying as many dozers and stuff?

Volkswagen moved into my town and they are bringing in more factory jobs but most are through temp agencies for $10.50/hour. Now $10.50 is more than $0/hour but it still isn't much when you are trying to support a family.

">>>>>>>>> It's too bad unemployment was ALREADY over 8% when he took office ."

You mean when PRESIDENT Obama took office. I was talking about SENATOR Obama, who, while a member of the LEGISLATIVE branch. Sorry for not being clearer.

"BTW , it took Reagan 3 years to get under 8% . Over 4 years to get it below 7% ."

And now, 3 years AFTER Obama took office, it is still above 8%. So are you saying Reagan was better than Obama?

">>>>>>>>> As opposed to the nonexistent one Republicans have offered ."

Its the same as the plan to regulate the sale of MILK, and the plan to regulate the sale of TOYS and the plan to regulate the sale of ANY product that is none of the Federal goverment's damn business. Yep, they can regulate SAFETY and STANDARDS of a product, but they got NO business regulating or mandating the PURCHASE of a product or the level of quality above or below a certain level.

I used to work for CAT back in 1992 and made 17.50/hr of course that was Alaska - if the job were in the lower 48 at that time it would have been around 12.00/hr which in 1992 wasn't too shabby - came with bookoo benefits too.

I would not be able to find anything comparable today...

If I disagree with what they will replace it with, yes, I will say something.

And nothing like having a DEMOCRAT controlled congress to pass the TARP, right? I mean you DO understand that the PRESIDENT does not control the purse strings, CONGRESS does. Maybe they should consider that in their BUDGET, if they ever decide to make one.

{save your fingers, we ALL know how you will now excuse the Democrats behavior because some Republican did the same thing in the past}

Just think....

One day, years from now, when you're both crotchety, crabby old men who are too old to do much more than sit in your Lazy Boy clutching the remote control, you'll look back at the days when you'd bicker back and forth about politics and politicians and say to yourself:

"Ahh the Good Ole Days. I sure did set that idiot straight!"

The "right" helps and shows us what we CAN do, the "left" helps and shows up what we SHOULD do. When kept in balance, this is a good thing. Out of balance, we end up doing what we CAN, but SHOULDN'T, or doing what we SHOULD, but CAN'T.

Honestly the unemployment numbers are totally bogus. We don't have nearly the problem with employment we think we do. We have a problem with mobility. In my area and others unemployment is below statistical zero. They hire illegals here at real wages, because they are desperate for employees (and Ben Nelson keeps INS off their backs). But....people can't or won't move. Divorces with kids, houses underwater, etc.

I have a friend who after her husband lost his job abandoned her house, packed her husband and kids in the car and moved across the country for a job her husband found and into a rental house they had never even seen. They left before they got behind so they still had cash, rented a home, and let the bank take the house (in portland OR which apparently was a very badly hit housing market). And everything is fine now. The bank finally sold the house and they are paying a little each month to pay what they owe. They are doing fine - and her husband has a good job. They miss family, but what can you do? Most people are unprepared (and a few unable) to do that in our culture today.

I agree EM. Our economy here is thriving. Yet I can't find qualified employees....they're out there, unemployed apparently, but unwilling to move here. I'm sure some can't, but I'm sure some could if they wanted to.
