DH was telling me that under Italian law (which thanks to his little side trip to wave at the shoreline he was under) the captain must stay on board until everyone has evacuated. He will most likely be going to prison for that as well as manslaughter. As he should. He placed everyone in danger to impress a friend and then abandoned the ship.

DS is in Naval JROCT. He says under maritime law it is a crime to abandon your ship/post before ALL civilians are safe. If that means 'going down with your ship' then you go down.

I would agree it's maritime law. It's the Captain's duty to ensure the safety of ALL aboard the vessel before his/her own safety (ie: leaving the boat).

I work in a shipyard, and the people I work with deal with captains ALL the time as they have to be approved by yacht insurers...

The captain should have been the last one off the ship or the last to go down/die ....

He abandoned his post and left his crew to fend for themselves or in this case clueless they were in danger and they redirected families back to their cabins!!! Yes he should go down ...

Alot of back and forth about whether he stayed or bailed, and whether he was straight with the Italian authorities about the situation. Even a throwaway comment about him having ordered dinner for himself and a woman after the crash.

I'd lay odds that he had become so comfortable in the job that he pretty much delegated responsibilities and relied on others to take care of business.

That's why I'm withholding judgement. A LOT of 'he said/she said' coming from the media, passengers, crew...who can say what is the actual truth, what is opinion, what is being said to sell newspapers and ad space and what is for someone's 'fifteen minutes of fame'.

The convo between the captain and the Italian Coast Guard or whatever it's called isn't "he said/he said". He had NO clue what the condition of the boat was, NOR its passengers. JUST on that one thing alone, he is FVCKED!
