OT-And here it starts...

A Hoke County preschooler was fed chicken nuggets for lunch because a state worker felt that her homemade lunch did not have enough nutritional value, according to a report by the Carolina Journal.

The West Hoke Elementary School student was in her More at Four classroom when a state agent who was inspecting lunch boxes decided that her packed lunch — which consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips — “did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines,” the Journal reports.

The decision was made under consideration of a regulation put in place by the the Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services, which requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs to meet USDA guidelines.

“When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones,” the Journal reports.

The student’s mother told the Journal she received a note from the school about the incident and was charged $1.25 for the cafeteria tray, from which her daughter only ate three chicken nuggets.

The note explained how students who did not bring “healthy lunches” would be offered the missing portions and that parents could be charged for the cost of the cafeteria food, the Journal reports.

The mother, who was not identified in the report, expressed concern about school officials telling her daughter that she wasn’t “packing her lunch box properly.”

I read this too, almost posted it. REALLY? I remember when I was an elementary volunteer YEARS ago, one of my son's classmates had only a small round donut hole and two pieces of candy in her lunch. Her classmates each handed her a piece of their lunch until it made up a sufficient lunch for her. It really bothered me that her lunch was hardly considered healthy, but so sweet that the kids chipped in to give her a good lunch. I did report it to the teacher.

THIS would send me over the edge! A turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, apple juice and chips aren't good enough?!! Wow my kids are in big trouble then! Ridiculous.

The government take over. It starts with, "We are interested in what is best for the kids." Then it goes to the OBVIOUS crappy parents who send the kid to school with a bottle of scotch and a ding dong.

THEN it goes to the subjective calls, "Well, OUR professional thinks you are not capable of packing your own child a lunch."

The really screwed up thing is that the turkey and cheese sandwich was NOT healthy...but the state provided chicken nuggets WERE.

Debbie Squires, education official at the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association (MEMSPA), has sparked some controversy after telling the House Education Committee in a hearing for a new school choice package, that teachers know better than parents what's best for their children, Squires elicited a shocked response from Education Committee Chair Thomas McMillin after testifying on the parent's role in school operations.

"[Educators] are the people who know best about how to serve children, that's not necessarily true of an individual resident," Squires said. "I'm not saying they don't want the best for their children, but they may not know what actually is best from an education standpoint."

McMillin responds, "Wow, parents don't know what's best for their child..."

Afterward, MLive's Dave Murray approached McMillin and got this comment:

"I'm surprised I didn't lose it when she said that," McMillin told Murray. "They think they know what's better for children than their own parents, and that's what I find upsetting."

So shut up, and sit in the corner and let the adults handle your child's education.

The government take over.

---> Sweetheart...the government is NOT taking over...it has ALREADY taken over. But be that as it may...obesity is a real problem in this country; one out of two kids will grow up to develop Type II Diabetes.
