Child Support X NFL Player...

Missing child support could land Terrell Owens in jail

Terrell Owens' latest money woes can land him in jail. The six-time Pro Bowl receiver, who is currently playing in the Indoor Football League, is $20,000 behind on child support payments for one of his children. The mother of the child filed a petition in Atlanta court that is asking for T.O. to be fined or jailed if he doesn't pay up.

The lawyer representing Melanie Paige Smith, the mother of one of Owens' four children, said in a letter to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that they have received no indication if Owens will ever pay for his daughter.

"We plan to ask the court to send a strong message, given that he has only paid support in the last 10 months after a contempt action has been filed against him," Kessler said.

This is the latest in money troubles for Owens. Two of his homes in Dallas are in foreclosure. He tried to get his child support obligations lowered by a court last summer, blaming the NFL lockout on his inability to pay. The court refused his request. According to a January GQ article, Owens owes nearly $45K in child support every month.

After 15 seasons in the NFL where Owens became known as much for his off-the-field antics as his ability to catch, his contract with the Cincinnati Bengals was not renewed for the 2011 season. He couldn't find an NFL team to sign him, and he signed with the Allen Wranglers of the IFL.

He can reportedly make up to $500,000 for the Wranglers, which will not cover one year of child support.

WHY would a judge decide NOT to lower his CS to a reasonable amount? Like the end of the article states- his CS is MORE than he MAKES currently. I know the dude has four kids, but REALLY?

The Breakdown:

Baby Mama #1, Monique Reynolds
T.O. and Monique have an 11-year-old son together. According to the papers, he paid $20,000/month in support until last year, when it was reduced to $11,202. He also gave her $100,000 to buy a house.

Baby Mama #2, Kimberly Floyd
They share a 7-year-old daughter, for whom TO was ordered to pay $20,000/month for back in 2005. In 2008, they agreed to drop that to $15,000.

Baby Mama #3, Samelia Miller
Miller gave birth to a son back in 2006. He was ordered to pay $13,400/month in support.

Baby Mama #4, Melanie Paige Smith
T.O. was ordered to pay $5,000/month for their daughter back in 2007. This is the only case where T.O. has not yet requested a reduction ... though his rep says he plans to ask for a modification.

In each of the cases where T.O. is requesting a reduction in child support payments, he says in his declaration, "My currently monthly income is zero ($0)."

In the papers, T.O. also claims to pay $62,366/month for various properties and says his home in Georgia is in foreclosure. He says he put all but two of his homes up for sale.

A rep for T.O. tells TMZ, "He has tried to keep paying all of these mothers what they were used to year after year, basically putting himself into a financial crisis. He has always paid his child support payments and loves his kids."
--------------------------------------------------------

I also read that he did miss a CS hearing to reduce CS to try out for the NFL. His lawyer stated that the amounts were based on his old salary of around $11M.

Simple , modifications can be denied based on what he could be making or that he has enough assets to continue to pay .

It could be argued that he would still be playing in the NFL if not for his own behavior , in other words , his reduction in income is the result of a self-imposed hardship making him ineligible for modification .

I watched him when he played for the Bills- his behavior wasn't a problem there. Although I am sure that his past behavior and the fact that he is almost "too old" to pay in the NFL has hurt him. Sorry, I just think that given his history along with the foreclosures and the fact that his current salary doesn't even EQUAL his CS, it should be reduced. I do wonder what his assets total? I haven't seen that anywhere yet.

I'd bet he's broke , pretty sad after making $80+ million from the NFL alone .

I would guess that too. Most of the time that is the case with the people that make millions- yes, very sad.

In this particular case I would venture a guess that these baby mama's are living off the CS and it would be really difficult to go from 15,000/m to say 500.00/m if you were living off the cs.

I am on the fence as to if he should get a decrease - he made 10's of millions - where the heck it all of it that he is losing houses and has nothing (I am guessing) in the bank. In all fairness the cs should probably be based on the 500,000/yr. He is working in the same profession it is just not the big bucks and he probably cannot get a "regular" job making even the 500,000/yr so I think he should get credit where credit is due.

It would be good to know his assets - he may be able to liquidate some??

He is broke, there have been many articles about it. He blames bad financial advisors, and bad investment deals.

Having 4 baby mamas is ridiculous. I would think after 2 he would have learned to wrap it up...I guess not.

I am not on the fence on this. CS should be based on your actual income. Period. Self-imposed poverty or not. If you want a big CS check don't bang a guy who is enough of a loser to live in a box rather than support his kids. I realize not everyone knows that ahead of time, but life isn't fair. But IMO it is completely against every intrinsic freedom supposedly granted in this country to say you don't have the right to be poorer and enjoy what is in your opinion a better quality of life simply because you have reproduced.
