How's THIS for ridiculous?!
      #803499 - 06/08/13 12:29 PM

3-year-old deaf boy may be forced to change the way he signs his name. School officials say his sign looks too much like a gun.

OLD story, and he wants to use a non standardized version of ASL, which i not doing the child ANY Service, as he will be expected to know ASL in real life outside of school.

"OLD story, and he wants to use a non standardized version of ASL, which i not doing the child ANY Service, as he will be expected to know ASL in real life outside of school."

SEE is standardized and is used successfully in some public schools... it just depends on the needs and the goals of the particular child and his family. Manual coded English systems bridge the literacy gap of ASL, and since low literacy is a common factor in the deaf community, your claim that SEE doesn't do the child "ANY service" is false. Gallaudet supports signed English, so it's not just some meritless, obscure system. FYI, the school uses ASL, so there is no issue with him not learning it. I get the SEE/ASL debate, but if that is what his parents want to teach him, more power to them. In the end, Hunter got to keep his name, and what a stupid thing for the school to even make an issue of.

Which has what to do with the story...which is that the kid's signature supposedly looks like a gun and the teacher wants him to learn how to sign his name differently.

The parents can give him a new name.

The whole "gun" thing is the PARENTS OPINION. The FACT of the matter is that his parents are teaching him SEE, while the school requires ASL. Hey, guess what, if you want your kid to converse in ancient sanskrit, great, but the school is not going to have a TEACHER that SPEAKS that, so he or she will have to learn basic ENGLISH (or at least SPANISH) as well.

Not sure what you're not getting here... SEE is not an opinion, the school is communicating with him in ASL, the question was whether or not he gets to keep his name sign that he's been using since he can remember, or does he have to change it because someone finds it threatening. Ironically, SEE is closer to English than ASL is, and ASL counts as a foreign language requirement in a few HSs and colleges, so your analogy doesn't really work...

SEE is NOT TAUGHT in the school, so the kids NAME, as the PARENTS taught him in SEE, is not RECOGNIZED. The gun thing was NEVER EVER EVER EVER said by ANYONE at the school.
