I have been married for 15 years and have 2 children (14 and 10). When we were married my wife decided to stop working and stay home with the children. She has not worked since and has just recently gone back to school to be a teacher, but that will take some time. If I attempt a divorce I have been told by others, that I would probably end up giving most of my salary to my wife. Is a divorce something I can even afford in my situation?

In your situation, you can be expected to have to pay spousal support for some duration (up to half the length of the marriage, but there are so many factors that it is hard to say exactly how much and how long) and, dpending upon the child custody arrangements which are worked out, child support as well.
Will this take up most of your income? Hard to say, but it will certainly take up a lot.
Can you even afford divorce? Again, hard to say; it depends upon how much money you are making now. It is clear, however, that divorce will likely create substantial negative changes in your financial situation.

but you will definitely pay some spousal support at least while she completes her course work and obtains her credential. You'll also pay child support.
As far as affording it, we don't know your salary or where you are located, in terms of cost of living.

I currently make ~120k/yr and live in the Washington DC/MD area. The cost of living, especially housing is very expensive.

to pay spousal support...and you most definitely will...most likely for a period of half the length of the marriage...while she obtains the necessary certifications to become a full time teacher. AND child support..however, this may be somewhat lessened because the spousal support you will pay is considered income to her and would help to lower your child support obligation.
