As a stay-at-home-mom for over 11 yrs
what are my custody rights? I'm sure laws are different state to state (I'm in IL) but he's threatening to get the kids b/c I can't pay for the house?!?!?!?!
Found a few "laws"
But afraid they'll work against me!
ALIMONY/MAINTENANCE/SPOUSAL SUPPORT:
(1) the time necessary to acquire sufficient education and training to enable the spouse to find appropriate employment;
(7) whether the spouse seeking support is able to support himself or herself or is unable to seek employment because he or she is the custodian of a child;
CHILD CUSTODY:

The laws look out for the best interest of the kids. You being home with them for 11 years, then making them move away from you, would not be in their best interest. I am assuming that you live a child focused life. No judge would take your kids away from you just because you need time to get on your feet and/or get the training that you need to support them. There are state funded programs for "suddenly single, stay at home Moms" I suggest you look into those programs... call all the places you can and ask questions about what you can do to better yourself, so that you can raise your kids. When I was in college, I was awarded the Barbara Nehbross scholarship. It is a scholarship for single Moms. Good Luck to you. Blessings, Sue (Onyx)

Just because you were a SAHM, doesn't give you any more "rights" to "physical" custody that your STBX.

Good luck, get an attorney too to help you protect your rights with kids and maybe alimony to help you get on your feet. I was told that if get alimony, it can help you further your education and you need that in your case. Health and Welfare will also help single mothers get back on their feet. Check into it.
