My soon to be ex is a gambler and an alcoholic. We own a house that my parents helped pay for. Now he gambled (yet again) and I want a divorce. He said he will take 1/2 the house and I can have sole custody of the 3 boys. So he ends up making out like a bandit while I have the sole responsibility of raising the kids? I also have just started a new RN job; and people tell me he can ask for alimony? Where is the fairness? What can I do to stop him?

I wouldn't go on what people are telling you... I would talk to a lawyer and find out exactly what you're up against. Some lawyers don't charge for a consultation.
On another note, I would think having sole custody would be the best since you say he's a gambler and alcoholic. He just might be handing you the golden ticket in my eyes. I know a lot of people who fight for sole custody because of similier situations and aren't awarded it and their kids are put through the wringer with the unfit parent.
Best wishes.
