I don't know what the deal is about the rental out back? Or whatever it was they mentioned. Sounds like some under the table income there too. My ex wanted to do everything under the table, and it nearly bit him in the butt. When we married, I did it legally. I had his helper go on regular wages and I filed the taxes and UEC, etc. But...my ex still liked hidden income and was hiding some from me during the marriage. Problem is...he was dumb enough to just not give me a 1099 from someone he'd worked for that I didn't know about. Uhhhhh, 1099....DO'H! So the IRS ammended the return AFTER our divorce. He got stuck with a huge tax bill, I got injured spouse. LOL
That's why telling the OP this is illegal IS being helpful. They just may not realize it yet. But if Uncle Sam comes knocking, they will.

when the choices are pay(or in this case, write me an inventory management program and maintain the website in exchange for the rent owed and rent that will be due)or move out of the house you've been in for 9 years with my two daughters and no where to go, as well as no money to go no where with really gave me no choices. By the way, my landlord used to be a divorce lawyer and his accountant used to work for the IRS so I wasn't too worried about that part of the deal. Ok it looks like I should wait until I get that "real" job before I attempt this, what do you think?

The deal with the rental in the back was my solution to paying for everything else, sure the rent was taken care of but there was still the matter of feeding the children, paying the utilities, paying for child care and covering the monthly bus pass when my vehicle took an early retirement due to a costly repair. Everyone at work suggested renting out the guest house and since my oldest son moved out it had been empty so I not only rented it I also got a nanny out of it for my daughters. You know I'm really beginning to think that I should just leave things alone now. I didn't realize what I was doing to survive was so wrong and it sounds like I would unintentionally be compromising my situation by being honest. Thanks you for enlightening me though, I appreciate that, really.

Not all professionals are ethical. Personally I think you should do some research and get all the facts, gather the consequences, then present it to Mr. Landlord and say that as far as you are concerned your debt is settled and you will be moving out.
