Another price tag shock
      #417886 - 06/23/08 04:16 PM

I swear every stinking time I go to the grocery store something new shocks me. Today's big surprise, vegatable oil. OMG! Less than a half gallon of store brand was almost $5. Crisco brand was $7 and Peanut oil was $11 (Eleven!!!!)

Man. It's getting really depressing.

well you just wait..cause everything made with corn..or is fed corn..like cows (steaks..all beef items..pigs..all pork items..chickens..all chicken items) are about to go sky high because of all of the flooding here in IL..iowa..and kansas..most of the corn fields flooded along "all" rivers and streams..and washed out the corn fields..it will be years before they can plant them again..so get ready..meat will be goin' up...

The price of EVERYTHING is going up. A dozen of eggs was at $2.00 a dozen. It wasn't THAT long ago (about 5 years ago) that you could get 4 dozen eggs for $1.00 (especially around Easter).

Farm subsidies need to stop. End of story. Let the market set the price.

I think farm subsidies should stop when other subsidies stop. I would much rather my tax dollars support farmers and ranchers ensuring an adaquate and safe food supply than to any other public assistance program.

Granted - I also believe that the only "fair" farm bill is no farm bill... but until the rest of the freebie programs are scaled back.. I'll continue to support the farm subsidies...

I grew up on a small family farm. I do not believe that farm subsidy's should stop, but farm subsidy's to rich farmers should. Why should some guy that makes $500,000 get any sort of subsidy? In the last few years my dad farmed, he actually had negative income things were so bad. Good thing my mom worked off the farm or I'm not sure how they would have gotten by.

The problem is, is that the government sets the price for crops. Farmers should not get paid to NOT grow crops or be guaranteed price floors. Stop importing crap from Mexico and other countries that we can grow in the US and like Relayer said, let the consumer set the price.

Another problem with farm subsidies world wide is that it does not level the playing field in third world nations and totally disrupts the concept of free markets.

Bet a lot of people who "used to" hunt will be back out there soon to feed their families and hopefully people who have a little yard space will grow their own small garden. We eat a lot of venison but I really love chicken, pork and beef. We have a small veggie garden and it's a whole lot cheaper than buying salad stuff at the grocery store. And we have lots of fruity stuff that goes in the freezer too like blackberries, raspberries, peaches, and stuff like that. Every little bit of home grown stuff helps and it's better for you too.
