What sites are reliable to book motels on-line? Dd15 has a med appt coming up. The specialist is 4hrs away from us, so we're making a trip out of it, but I'd like to book the motel in advance to make sure, well...that we have one when we get there. I've heard of motels.com, expedia.com, etc., but have never used them. Any sites you guys would recommend or I should stay away from? Or do I just get out the phonebook and start calling area motels?

Used 'em all. Travelocity, Expedia, Hotels.com, heck, I just used Priceline.. set my own price AND got EXACTLY the hotel I wanted to stay in. Saved 50% off the hotel's website "best rate".
I've NEVER had a problem with any of them.

i've had a few bad experiences with hotels.com which is owned by expedia. had a few bad experiences with expedia as well (like when i check into the hotel they never received the fax notification from expedia). i usually find the hotel prices on hotels.com then go directly to that website or call the hotel direct to make the reservation. it's usually cheaper, and i don't deal with the hassle or additional charges.

I love Travelocity. I also use Hotwire, but I feel they were dishonest with the hotel they sold me last time (called it a 4 star when it is really 3.5 star resort.)

I love Priceline and their Name your Own Price. Seems like a good deal. Never have any problems.
I used Hotwire and felt gipped. The hotel was not as nice as advertised. I got a cheaper rate at the same hotel by asking at the front desk.

We've always used Priceline and had fairly good luck.

This is too funny Gal. A 3.5 vs. a 4.0 so what is the difference?
I've used them all too. I'd find one you like on one of the sites and call them directly to see if they have anything better available. Sometimes they have better offers you don't see online. I use Expedia most because they have lots of photos.

sites. Mainly Expedia, had a bad experience with hotwire, but my girlfriend loves it. Why not call the hotel you're thinking about directly and see if they can match the rates you see posted online? I've been doing this more and more. I got a sweet room at the JW Marriot for 1/2 off in Hawaii by calling. And I seem to get better rooms than what you'll get from Expedia and hotwire by calling the hotel.

...4.7 inches bigger.
Honestly, I have NEVER understood staying in a top notch hotel on vacation. When I travel, I am going to SEE something, and it is not a hotel room. Clean sheets and a comfortable bed, and I am good.
Now, when I travel for business, and I will be working in the room, I like to have a wet bar and a decent desk.

That is what I did when I went looking for a hotel last October. I checked prices online and than called the hotel directly, not the 1-800 line but the actual hotel. I talked to the clerk who answered and got a better price than what was quoted online. I also asked question about the area and the clerk gave me some wonderful info that we used. When we left, I talked to the manager about what a great experience we had because of that clerk and the information that she gave us.
My choice was between 2 hotels and I picked the one with the friendlier staff. The other hotel that I called (down the street from the one we stayed) was short on the phone and acted like I was bothering her. Didn't want to stay there at all.

...there is NO standard for "stars" at a hotel. Different companies all rate things differently, hell, AAA used DIAMONDS instead of stars. Although there IS a movement to standardize them, there is nothing that says "This is what a four star means, and this is what a three star means"

There's a difference between 3.5 and 4 stars. 4 stars is an entirely different "level." I was promised a 4 star hotel, but they don't tell you the name until after you've fully paid, and you can't cancel. After I paid, they revealed the name to me. I go look up the reviews/rating and find that the resort would only rate a 3.5 on a GOOD day. What I paid for teh 4 star, I could have booked a 3.5 star for less. It was a rip.

I always book hotels online for my boss. Never have a problem - just print the confirmation page and be sure to have the confirmation number onhand when you arrive.

...that each site or company DOESN'T give their own ratings with no standards, you give me a link to ONE site that gives IT'S ratings?
Bottom line, there is NO standard, do some research, and you will see that. You won't ADMIT it, but that is a FACT.

Like a few others posted, sometimes calling the hotel works better. I know here at the one I work at it is cheaper for us to give the customer the room quoted online instead of them booking it online because we have to pay a travel agent fee on top of the cheap rate the customer was given. Not worth it in my book.
