Why do you feel that way? This kids jumped over TWO fences and entered a restricted zone to retrieve a hat. This accident had NOTHING to do with ride safety.

I used to work at Disney World. I worked at Space Mountain. I will ride any roller coaster at ANY reputable park. (I will NOT ride any carnival rides now that I have a working understanding of ride safety.)
You are safer on a ride at WDW than you are in your car, for certain!

Iwas talking to the operator after wards, she said that she was UNABLE to restart it until the maintenence team inserted THEIR key and did an internal reset. And even then, there was a MINIMUM of 30 minutes before the computer would allow it to run, to prevent maintenence from just doing a reset and run.
And on the major rides every area supervisor and the Ride OPs manager would come running to make sure everything was okay. I've pulled rafts into the holding pond with people on them after the rafts jammed. Not a major or life threatening situation by any means but I along with every crew member had to know exactly where to be. No one was assigned a spot or anything, it depended on what position you were doing at the time so really you had to know where you had to be in accordance with every attendance position. Usually the strongest guy was assigned to hooking the rafts and pulling them in before someone else took hold. There were a couple of REALLY strong girls who could do it (I was not one of them). Now I will admit it was 20 years ago that I worked there and I'm sure things are even more automated now than then, but they do still train pretty extensively. If you start pre-season the 1st 4 weekends before the park opens are spent 8 hours a day doing nothing but studying SOP manuals. It was rather a badge of honor back then to be in the group with the greatest amount of punches on your cert badge.
One of the guys I started working with back in 1987 is now the Ride Ops manager at the Six Flags in IL. I'm soooooo envious. What an awesome job!

I'm not longer into roller coasters, but my kids LOVE them.
People can be idiots. My D worked at an amusement park last year, she was a lifeguard and worked at different posts. One was a type of large waterslide. There were signs about the size of kids who can go on the ride. 2 little kids wanted to go on but they were 2 small. The parents were yelling at my D that they paid money to get into the park and if their D wanted to ride they should be able to. Nope my D stood her ground and ended up calling her supervisor and security for help because the parents were swearing at here. She didn't get paid enough for that type of harassment. The parents and kids left that area but they were still causing problems at other areas. They ended up being kicked out of the park, which I think was the correct thing to do.
My D had a week worth of training before she was able to do be a lifeguard. In the little over a month that she was there she had a few saves and 2 were serious. ALL of them involved people doing things that they were not suppose to be doing. One save she was the 2nd on the scene. She was off duty walking by when she heard the whistle, she jumped in with her full clothing (the sweats that they wear over their swimsuit) and her cell phone IN her pocket. She dropped her backpack before she entered the water. She said she didn't think, she heard the whistle and reacted as she was taught to do. Because of their training the guy ended up not having as severe of an injury as he could of had. My D was 17 yo at the time.
The workers may be young but they are trained. Many of them take their job seriously.

I could NOT keep my son off the roller coasters if I tried! Well, I COULD, but we wouldn't be going to any amusement parks at all.
We just got back from spending 2 days at Fiesta Texas where he & his step-nephew rode every roller coaster they have. Multiple times. As a matter of fact, son's email is "CoasterLuvR' and he wants to design roller coasters when he grows up!!

The death of this fellow really has nothing to do with why I don't enjoy the rides as much as I used to. I'm getting old I guess and getting wimpy...and I know anything can happen...especially to me. I'm not as carefree about those kinds of things any longer. Now, in my younger years I was a rebel and a daredevil...and a rowdy one at that. lol
