Actually, I'm thinking of doing just that. I'm thinking of making a weekly visit to the homes we're building so I can know where we are in the process. The only problem with that is catching up on everything else that needs to be done.
I do a lot of work on the financial end. I do a lot of work with the hotel. I do a lot of work with the sales end. And I try to stay the hell out of the property management.
Unfortunately, I'm spending a great deal of my time right now picking up after this builder, and picking up after the months of not having anyone in my position. The girl before me was in a car wreck, and they tried to hold the position open for her, but several months later had to hire out...and got me. So, it's been somewhat of a mess.

When I bought my house, there were a lot of things wrong with it that had to be done over and the rework took forever and it was very frustrating. You could see the seams in the drywall, which took forever to fix and ended up being a messy, dusty mess after they half ass fixed it. The basement blocks were covered in dried thick mud, which they would not fix because it wasn't part of the living area. Hot water heater broke within a month (note: I found an empty bud light bottle on the ledge near it). Um, bathroom sink leaked, kitchen sink leaked, a/c leaks into the basement (still to this day so I had to create my own work around). Ummmm, oh phone would not work because the builder put a nail through the phone line...in the corner of the attic so it took the phone guy forever to find the problem. Ummm...when it rains, my porch light blows. And my living room window leaked. I had a security system installed and could never use it because whenever it rained the damn thing would started buzzing (eletrical wiring issue). Okay, then they'd track mud into my house when they came to do stuff, why? Because it took them NINE months to put the sod down and ONE year to get the black top done. For one year it was a dirt road and it was a mess. I will NEVER ever buy a house from that company again. Owner (equivalant to your boss) just happens to be my childhood friend's uncle who I spent many a holiday with. I was extremely disappointed in him. And his sales rep really fluffed it up. It was a new neighborhood and he said we have rules for this and that and it will always be a great place to live...NOT. Two murders in one year...one drug related and one a lesbian lover triangle. Told me they would not build across from my house because of some wetlands rule...guess what, I have about 45 new houses across from mine. My friend's dad's electric company did the wiring...shitty work. I really thought I was doing well by going to her family. I knew them my whole life. I can't tell you how disgusted they make me now. And guess who had to handle my irate calls...his exec assistant, bless her heart. I bet she found a new job.
Is the builder a friend of your boss? In my hometown, most of the builders/roofers/concrete workers are also the potheads/heavy drinkers/druggies or sneaky, underhanded business people.

One other thing, you will not be able to seperate yourself from the company, there is no client that is going to say well the company is crappy, but this one person made it worthwhile. They will have a lasting first imnpression of the company and all the "its not my faults" in the world are not going to change what they think of the company. If you have a chance to make it right before that happens on a case by case basis, you can make a difference, but all the cleaning up after the fact will not make much difference. You are talking about the single most expensive item anyone will ever buy in their lifetime, they want it right the first time.

I'm not sure what the dynamic is between boss and the builder...other than boss doesn't like change. I've learned that in my 6-weeks. Anything that happens is going to have to come from me, maybe with some prodding from his wife.
The houses are realllly good quality...once everythign is done. I just don't understand. I throw everything into my job and customer satisfaction...I don't get people who don't.
