OT - Pets and fleas
      #424194 - 07/07/08 09:45 AM

For all of you who have pets…..please take care to check them over often for fleas and ticks.

We found out from our vet that the latest Hartz and Advantage medications are working as good as they use too. He has had 11 cats in his office in the past 2 weeks that were brought in with infested with fleas. They were being treated and still became enemic due to the amount of fleas on them. He lost 3 of them including our three month old kitten. :(

I bathed Tater Tot (our kitten) weekly and was treating the adult cats with both collars and drops. Apparently she was already enemic due to her size and being the runt. So just a few fleas became life threatening to her. Even with a blood transfusion she didn’t survive.
Please keep a close eye on your pets…especially outdoor pets that you might see laying around or showing signs of illness.

Good advice, but using collars and bathing is not how you get rid of fleas.

You MUST follow several steps to get rid of them.

First of all, you have to know that fleas live in your carpet and yard, NOT on your pet. They spend 90% of their life OFF of your pet. They only jump on to feed.

So, even if you kill all of the fleas on your pet, you've only killed 10% of them, and they will be re-infested within a few hours.

Step one...deflea your pet and then send them away for 3 days.

Spray your yard and your home...EVERYWHERE, under your bed, in your closet...EVERYWHERE at the same time.

Repeat two weeks later because even after you treat your house/yard, the flea eggs will hatch within two weeks, necessating a re-treat.

If you dno't do that, you will never be rid of fleas.

Gal

What do you use on the yard to kill fleas? We just rescued a kitten (last week) from the new "Lowe's" that just opened in April. There's no sign of fleas at this time but want to do all I can for that little thingy.

I'm not a cat person but I will keep it and TAKE CARE OF IT. Her vet appt. is this week! The soonest I could get.

Good for you!

You need to go get one of those pump-up spray bottles...the kind with the wand that you walk around with and spray.

We don't have fleas in Colordo..never seens one...and I can't remember what I used in Fla. Go look at the products they have...but make sure the kitty doesn't go in the yard for a few days after you spray.

We use some sort of Max yard bug killer. Works for fleas too. Bought it at Lowes. Hubby uses the thingie Gal mentioned, the pump sprayer thingie and we spray in the AM, lock up the dogs and head out. When we return, the yard is OK for pets and we let them out.

We also use Advantage. We never had luck with any other kind.

Yes, We have lots of acres so we do own the pump THINGY. Now that you mention it....I have seen Max Bug junk in lowe's (just never a need for it). We see the vet tonight so hopefully she's well enough to survive. She was almost starved TO DEATH (amongst other things). :(

You can get bug spray for yards/lawns at Lowes, ironically where you found your kitten. I alternate between Frontline and Advantage for my dogs (hairy beasts) and cat. We never have fleas because both work so well. The hartz stuff has never worked for my pets.

Great post Ryvers - very timely.

The Hartz stuff hasn't ever worked for me. The Advantix and Advantage products still do work for us, but Frontline quit a couple of years ago. My veterinarian only recommends Advantage, but that may be due to our region. What works in some areas doesn't seem to work in others. My one gf in MI swears by Frontline to this day but it does nothing here.

I don't have issues with fleas outside thanks to the regular pest control visits, which are pretty much a necessity in my state.

In the house I've had two bouts with fleas, which were very minimal thanks to fast action. As 1966 said, the fleas do infest themselves in the carpet if given the chance, and unless you kill the eggs you're toast. I use Borax Mule Team powder sprinkled on the carpet overnite once a week (vacuum up after 24hrs) for 3 weeks. I Capstar the dogs outside, all at one time, give them a bath, and immediately apply flea control. Next two days they get an additional Capstar. Works great. Oh, and you Capstar them outside because the fleas will literally fall or jump off the pet.

The Borax you can get at the grocery in the laundry aisle very cheap.

The Capstar tablets kill the fleas already alive on the pet and runs $6 a pill from my vet.

The Advantage I buy in bulk because of the # of dogs I have so I don't know the per package cost. The pkg cost breaks down by weight anyways so it varies.

One thing for sure, if fleas are not kept under control it can certainly end up with the pet getting allergies. Then, thru no fault of the pets, you either end up giving them steroids to get thru the allergies, or some people will dump the pet to avoid the cost.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
