Managing Homework and Play
      #438775 - 08/12/08 07:11 AM

Looking for ways to manage homework and play. My kids get off the bus at around 415. When they get home i talk with them about how their day was and what they did for the day, then we go thru their agenda to see what kind of homework they have for the evening. This takes about 30 minutes, so they start their homework around 445. You're not supposed to spend but 20 minutes on homework. With two kids having homework i try to work with one on the problems he/she has while the other is working on the problems that he/she understands and then vice versa. They are also supposed to spend 20 minutes a day reading. By the time all of this is done and we go over their homework it's 6 or after. Then it's time to cook dinner and eat, then showers and bed. So how do i manage this and still have time for them to play and be kids?

I found weekedns as their time. it is hard to find additional hours in a day when it just keeps shrinking.

i, too, have a really hard time managing homework and free time for my kids. i work full time and don't get off til 5. the kids usually never have their homework done at daycare so when we get home about 6 they each have a list of assignments to be done, there's dinner to cook, chores to do, and then it's bathtime and bed. i feel bad cuz they have no fun time but there's not really much else that can be done. i guess it's like that other poster said... weekends are free time.

And homework is NEVER ever only 20 minutes of their time. It's always seems to be way more doesn't it?

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but I will tell you what works in my household. My 2 youngest get off the bus at a little before 3:45, they get snack, we talk until about 4. They start homework, it is almost always done before 4:30. Then, they go outside, walk their dogs for 15 minutes. Put the dogs up, they play with the other kids until 6. They eat by 6:30. At 7, DS gets in the shower. DH is ome by 7:10 or so, then he goes over their homework usually, just to see what they are doing in school. By 7:15, DD10 is in the shower. Then, by 7:45, DD11 is in the shower. DS brushes his teeth around 7:30, lays down at 7:40 and reads until 8. Same thing with DD10, just a little time variation since she goes to bed at 8:30. DD11 doesn't go to bed until 9, so she lays down at 8:40 to get her 20 minutes of reading in. It is a pretty easy routine in our house. But, I realize not every household works like ours.

For the last 2 years I couldn't do it. My son (a GT bright, gifted student) had 2-3 HOURS of HW a night. Mainly because he had trouble focusing and just sitting down and 'doing it'. Plus I had to quiz him on spelling, vocab, he had reading passages to read/answer questions over, a journal he was responsible for writing 1/2 page in EVERY DAY, etc.

It was a nightmare. I don't know what parents do with kids that need more help than my son did doing HW. He just basically needs me to keep him 'on task'....

Both my son & I are HOPING and PRAYING that this year (he's in 6th now) the HW will slack off some!! It was lucky he wasn't in some extracurricular activity-- we NEVER would have had time for the meetings/practices, etc.

my DD is in 6th grade this year and most likely, the HW load will increase. Seeing as she doesn't get home from school until after 5, the schedule might change up some.

DS's school goes from 7:15-2:45. So he's home by 3:30. This is only the first week, so we'll see how it goes!
