I have a non-modifiable divorce and pay alimony to my ex, have never been late on the monthly payment for 4 yrs- but- I was just laid off, can I stop paying until I have a new job?

Maintenance can be modifiable or non-modifiable depending on the wording of the original divorce documents. The parties can agree that Maintenance is non-modifiable by stating it clearly in the final divorce documents. If you agreed to this, it is going to be very difficult if impossible. Courts RARELY order this type of arrangement without agreement of both parties. I wish I had a better answer for you, times are tough and finding employment is very difficult, but you committed to being able to pay alimony under all circumstances and most courts will make expect you to keep your committment.
