Desperately need tax help/advice
      #595264 - 11/04/09 08:39 AM

My ex and I split up in 2006 after he became physically abusive with my son, who was then 13. The second I called the police, my life changed forever. Before that happened, we had two incomes (his and mine) and we had just purchased a home and a new car. After a year of battling in court, he finally went to jail, but that left me with a huge mortgage for the house and only my one income. After speaking with an attorney, I filed bankruptcy, lost my home & vehicle, and got out of that situation with barely enough to get by. Trying to make a comeback during a recession has been near impossible, and although I work two jobs - one full-time and one part-time, I now find myself in no better financial shape than I was then. I do not receive assistance of any kind (food stamps, Section 8, etc.) and I hate the thought of applying when I know that there are people out there that don't have jobs that need it more than me. My worry is this: because I could not afford the fees associated with filing my taxes, I haven't filed for 2006 - 2008. I am scared and tired of worrying when the shoe is going to drop. It's the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, and it bothers me all day long, every single day. Does anyone have any advice for me as to how to get my taxes filed without making me more broke than what I already am?

You couldn't afford the FEES?

Did it occur to you to do them yourself?

If you owed the IRS money in those years, you're now looking at interest AND penalties for not filing. If they owed you money, you may have to pay some type of fee for not filing.

Recall please that your W2's are sent to the IRS....they may not catch up with you soon, but they will catch up with you.

You might want to check with your attorney on this one.

You need to file ASAP. Failure to file penalties are stiff and rarely, if ever abated by the IRS. You need to get a CPA now. Perhaps you can get one to take a small retainer and a payment plan to get you caught up. You need to file even if you cannot pay. I forget the form number, but you would include a payment plan form to the IRS. They will accept just about any payment plan you suggest (and on this form, YOU do get to suggest it). File NOW. If you are proficient with instructions, you don't even need a CPA to file for you, you can go to irs.gov and find the forms and do it all yourself.

Avaya, it would seem to me that barring anything really out of the ordinary, the OP could do her taxes herself?

At the very least, she could have TRIED to do them herself. The IRS will correct your return if needed --

I simply can't believe that because of lack of resources sto use a paid tax preparer, she just didn't file.

Heck, I believe there is even a free program online to use to figure out your taxes.

Worse case scenario, file a short form which anyone should be able to understand.
