Holy crap - con artists
      #596674 - 11/07/09 08:50 AM

So I'm on my FB...and I get an IM from one of my close girlfriends.

She asks how I'm doing, then goes on to say she's stranded in London, got mugged and needed some money.

I asked how much - she said $920. Told her I don't have that kind of money, asked if I could call her mom or brother to help her out....but I'd be able to lend her a few hundred if she needed it...but the entire situation was just weird.

I then asked her so that I can be sure it's really HER, to tell me something I'd know about her (I've known her for over 10 years)....she says her head isn't on straight and she had a concussion but she'd refund me tomorrow.

Um WTF. No. So I called my friend - of course she's HERE and at work....

I changed her [censored] for her. When I logged in I saw the person trying to IM other people as well.

How scary - people are stupid!

Very scary!

And I was like REALLY/? You have a concussion but you're on FACEBOOK asking for money? Just didn't add up.

After I talked to my friend, I wrote him back and said um yeah I'm on the phone w/ my friend now - go con someone else!

Why??? If it's a close GF, wouldn't you at least KNOW if she was out of the country??

Yeah, got concussion, got mugged, and she somehow gets onto a computer or blackberry and can remember passwords etc. I bet if you offered her the money she would know how to arrange for it to be sent.

I would have said "Give me your address and stay right there! I have the American Embassy on the phone and they are sending a car to pick you up and fly you home!"

And how many people are sucked into that?

I have to wonder... [Re: KiwiGirl]

...why something like that would even WORK now adays. I mean I could see it in the old days when you could be caught out of country with no money, but in the electronic age, where money zips all over the world in SECONDS, who would have EVERY DIME they had in the world in CASH in their POCKET?
