Let me begin by letting you know I'm trying to help my dad out on this one. Roughly 18 months ago, my mother left with another man that she had known in highschool. They had been married 17 or 18 years at the time, and she left within hours of telling him. He had no idea it was coming, because she had spent several weeks bragging on how great things were at church and telling everyone how much she loved him. Well after a year and a half, they still haven't finished getting divorced. She sent him and e-mail today saying she is giving him two options. A.) He forfeits all the possessions she wishes to take and takes ownership of her remaining medical bills. B.) She takes him to court and demands half of all property and money earned, including what has been made since she abandoned us. Now I personally don't think in the state of North Carolina she has any rights to any possessions she left behind, due to abandonment. Let me also state, that my dad let her take whatever she wanted when she left, and gave her her choice of cars. She took a digital camera, a computer, one of the vehicles, some dishes, and clothes. Since she's been gone, my dad has also been gracious enough to send her several articles of clothing she left behind and requested, along with family photos on the condition that she scanned and sent him digital copies. He paid for a cd-writer for her computer and all the cd's and dvd's required to do this as well. Within a month or two of leaving, she received a settlement from workman's comp totaling roughly $15,000. At this time I believe that is about all the information I have on the situation, and I would love to know if anyone can provide information on some scenarios that this works out well for my dad in. She left and all the kids stayed with him. We live in North Carolina which is where they resided when she left, and she now lives with her new boyfriend in Arkansas. Thank you very much in advance for your help; I'd really hate to see my dad get the short end on this, seeing as he has been nothing but nice about it all.
