Is it financially to my benefit or not to get a better job before I file for D, or quit the one I have altogether?
My only concern here is how to best take care of my children.

Well, considering jobs usually pay you $$$, my guess would be the best way for you to take care of your children would be to be gainfully employed. My vote would be that working is more financially beneficial than not working.

Sherron, I was told somewhere along the way that I will be awarded less child support if I'm working fewer hours. Is this typically true?

It will likely have a small difference in what you get for child support, but not as much as the difference in what you will gain from having a job.
Is it fair for you to NOT get a job just because you want to wait until you can suck him for all he's worth first? Sure you could do that, but it is not in the best interest of your children. It can also be seen as the reason you chose not to get a job if it is seen by a judge which would potentially negatively hurt your case.
