I've been married about 28 years and am considering leaving my wife. She has worked on and off during our marriage, and although she has a MSW, has worked menial jobs. When I made a significant amount of income, she decided to not work because she didn't need to. We have two non-minor children. If I want a divorce, what can I expect to pay in maintenance and for how long? I make approximately $500,000/year. I am not looking to screw her, but I am not looking to end up with nothing after all the hard work I put in to make a good income. I am willing to give her the house in a settlement and pay for my child's remaining college education. I'm just trying to get a sense of what a realistic split of assets and maintenance might amount to. The house is our biggest asset, the rest is not really significant. I live in Lake County, Illinois. Am also looking for some good lawyer recommendations if anyone has one.

I made $150K and he made $22K. He stayed home with the kids for 8 years of our 19 year marriage. My lawyer said worst case was 15% of my gross for life. Yep, life. Yep, gross not net income.
We ended up settling and he got $180K (half equity in home plus another $10K for debt) + 18 months paid COBRA + 1/2 my 401K (he never had a 401K of his own). He agreed to no SS. If we had gone to trial I really think it would have been in the $1000-$1500/month range for 3-5 years. Since he is a drug addict I really wanted to close that door because he never would have gotten a job and would have tried to continually modify the arrangement to prolong it as long as possible.
He blew through the money in 18 months. he has nothing and is living in a halfway house. I saw two months of CS. He currently owes me $30K+. I'll never see any of it. Thank God I am not still tied to him via SS.

I could live with 15% of my income for life (except after retirement), even if it's on my gross. I had thought I heard it could be something like 30% of net, which would be a lot more than 15% of my gross. But she may dig in and want more and that can cause a lot of trouble. My hope is to not have it go to court, so hopefully she'd have a good lawyer who would tell her what is realistic and what is not. Thankfully, I don't have to pay child support and I am willing to pay for the rest of my child's college education.
