My friends ex paid a $1600 retainer for her attorney. In the final decree she was awarded attorney fees. I am just curious as to whether or not it is common practice for the attorney to include that retainer in what he says is his final bill. In my way of thinking that money was already paid and he should only have to pay charges accrued over that amount. If this is not common who would he need to contact about this? Thank you for reading

Yes. It is generally included as part of legal fees owed. A retainer is an advance payment against which hourly fees are assessed. As a result, the total paid would be legal fees.
