Honestly the unemployment numbers are totally bogus. We don't have nearly the problem with employment we think we do. We have a problem with mobility. In my area and others unemployment is below statistical zero. They hire illegals here at real wages, because they are desperate for employees (and Ben Nelson keeps INS off their backs). But....people can't or won't move. Divorces with kids, houses underwater, etc.
I have a friend who after her husband lost his job abandoned her house, packed her husband and kids in the car and moved across the country for a job her husband found and into a rental house they had never even seen. They left before they got behind so they still had cash, rented a home, and let the bank take the house (in portland OR which apparently was a very badly hit housing market). And everything is fine now. The bank finally sold the house and they are paying a little each month to pay what they owe. They are doing fine - and her husband has a good job. They miss family, but what can you do? Most people are unprepared (and a few unable) to do that in our culture today.

I agree EM. Our economy here is thriving. Yet I can't find qualified employees....they're out there, unemployed apparently, but unwilling to move here. I'm sure some can't, but I'm sure some could if they wanted to.
