I am helping to set up a library in a juvenile correctional facility/prison venue for youth ages 12-21. This is going to be somewhat Christian based, but the movies and books do not have to be about God- but having a loving message. I am also trying to get a listening station started. So my plan is to bring in Christian CDs. Ultimately I am donating Kindles and CD devices to get this library off the ground.
I would like help from those of you who are Christians and know some great books, movies and CDs. Again the movies and books do not all have to be Christian based, as part of the library will consist of the Christian faith based books, the Bible and devotionals. I would like some of each, problem is THEY HAVE TO BE G RATED!!! So any ideas on what a group of 12-21 male youths might be interested in? I wish we could push the rating to PG, BUT I understand and respect their guidelines.
So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

CD's I'd go for anything by Toby Mac, Casting Crowns, That's What I Call Music has several compilation albums. I like Francesca Battistelli (sp) and Matt Maher.
Movies...well G rated movies are few, but they do exist. I would look for The Rookie and maybe Herbie Fully Loaded, some old classics like Mary Poppins or Willy Wonka. I don't have much experience in the Christian genre aside from Veggie Tales which may not appeal to that age.
Books, Christianbook.com has a teen book section, in fact, I get a lot of things from there, gifts and such, you should check it out for sure. You could get some great ideas there.

I am really loving David Crowder Band and Sidewalk Prophets currently because they have a rock vibe to them, but the lyrics are incredibly powerful! SWP's "You Love Me Anyway" is just a testimony in itself.
My kids love the movie "Fireproof" and there is a movie called "The Grace Card" but both PG. Thanks for the help!
ETA: Even the movie "UP" is rated PG!

Fireproof is a goodie! Also, Courageous, Facing the Giants (not sure what the ratings are, but they are awesome Christian movies, made by the same ppl that made Fireproof). Chronicles of Narnia, the books and the movies (not sure of the movie ratings).
I think Gs will be hard to find unless you go with all Disney movies. I found this website for you: [censored]://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic/mpaa.htm?page=G&p=.htm. It has the Princess Diaries, Sound of Music, etc.

Wow good luck finding g movies that aren't for little kids... If you google 'movies rated g' several sites with good lists come up:

Love Chris Tomlin CD's - Christian music that is upbeat with a spiritual message and it would be great for the ages you have mentioned.
He does a great rendition of Amazing Grace and much more I love his live edition that has several songs that the at the concert he stops and lets the crowd sing the chorus. He has several CD's out but my favorite is the live one and normally I do not like live CD's.
I wish he would have a concert in my state as I would be first in line for the tickets =) My 10 year old loves his music.
You could also get the "4 Wooden Crosses" CD that is country singers - it is another one of my favorites - I do not know the rating - it first came out through Time Life CD's but you can get it at Walmart now.
I will take some time and go through my stuff and get some more ideas for you - I have a lot to do this week so I will pm them to you when I get it all together if that is ok?
I absolutely love this idea and maybe you could let me know how it works out as I would love to do that with the Juvi here and could use your expertise and feedback.

I have some great suggestions, but since I am not a Christian, you probably wouldn't like them. BTW, make sure you beat the prisoners over the head with the bible, folks like that make great atheists when you folks are done with them.

Anything CS. Lewis....... He wrote some awesome fiction......
Your comment on "for those of you that are Christian's" is a little absurd...implies those that aren't shouldn't comment of are clueless...I know a "Christian" last down the road that's illiterate....maybe I should ask her....

They do not HAVE to use the somewhat Christian based library so there probably won't be any beating over the head with bibles going on and if someone wants to be an atheist or a christian they will find a way - a few books, movies, cd's certainly won't convert anyone in either direction.
Why is it when someone shares the word of God you always imply that it is being forced upon the individual?
Free will baby, free will =)
I think Cassie probably thought asking Christians was a good way to go because as a Christian an individual may know of several items - I am sure if your items are along the lines she is looking you could contribute. If you have some great suggestions for Christian literature. movies, and music you should share them.

Fireproof and Courageous were two movies that I really hated.....so predictable.... My daughter even didn't like them and my son walked away from them.
I wonder if CS Lewis movies like Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe are G? I have those books on tapes from 8 years ago...... What series was it..... Books about end of times.....boogers.... What was it? Anyway, I have the whole series ...let me go check on what it is.....Timothy something was the writer......

Actually I wrote that the books do not have to be about God, but have to have a loving message- that was for anyone.
I wanted help specifically from some Christians because we are lacking IN THAT specific area of books that may help kids. ETA: If I offended, I apologize. I did feel the need to get some ideas from other Christians.
I posted TO Christians more specifically because I didn't want this thread to be about religion and me going into a juvenile correctional facility to beat kids over the head with Bibles which I DO NOT DO.
I talk to these kids about LIFE, about EDUCATION, about the mistakes they have made, about how they can CHANGE their lives. Yes, I talk about God because they are coming into my group to learn about God. They are not forced...it is of their own free will that 80 kids (half the facility) come to the service and worship my church family provide at the facility. They choose church OVER basketball, free time and video games. I am helping to put the Library together to feed both minds of those who want to learn about God and other books with loving messages.

We have the Left Behind series already. I would assume it is rated G, unless that is just the rule for us bringing in new things. My children both LOVED Fireproof. They will watch it over and over... Unfortunately is is rated PG. I believe Narnia was on the list so that is probably rated G.

Actually, checking with some of the local churches would probably give you a bunch of good ideas. I would imagine they have all kinds of youth reading lists. The grid iron gang :) Holes.....so many stories of redemption, and other positive messages, and how kid's changed their own lives, whether it was through religion, or not....even the local libraries.

I just believe that I should be given the chance to right my words if I offended anyone- not my intention- before I am JUDGED by my heart. No one knows someone's heart, I did not decide to volunteer my time at this facility to beat anyone up. These kids are a NUMBER to most, I am there to find out their names and to be a listening ear. I could not believe how appreciative these boys were just to have someone listen to them and call them by name. I do not beat people into believing in Jesus and I do respect those who do not.
Yes you are right. Local libraries is a great idea. Books with a great message is perfect and for those of you who have ideas on books with a Christian message is great too.

"They do not HAVE to use the somewhat Christian based library"
So this jail has MULTIPLE libraries? and how do you get "somewhat christian based", it is being STARTING by a Christian with the INTENT of making it up with MAJORITY Christian material.
"Why is it when someone shares the word of God you always imply that it is being forced upon the individual?"
True, I mean its not like these folks are locked up and ONLY have access to certain things, oh, wait, yes it IS.
"If you have some great suggestions for Christian literature. movies, and music you should share them."
And THIS is what pisses people off. Like CHRISTIANS have the lock on MORAL and ETHICAL behavior. As though a NON Christian is simply INCAPABLE of suggesting something EFFECTIVE for rehabilitating children.
Of course, the CHRISTIAN programs are SO effective, lets "Pray the gay away" and "Instead of robbing a store, you can play basketball at church..."

Of course they are, and Cassie already said she is more than open to that, and that the program is voluntary. Their choices are limnited becauseof their actions. They do not have to particpate, and Christian programs do not have the lock on any moral or ethical behavior, just like any other religion or atheists. There is not one fits all answer, but she is offering one that may work, and it is not the only one. The truth is that whatever proram these kids had before, chistian, atheist, good parents, bad parents, bad community, good community, well that did nto work, so offering them something, that they can voluntarily participate in has to be a bad thing, just because it is Christian. It is just one piece of the puzzle.

It was the ATTITUDE of the original post, and I was not the only one who noticed it, RWS said something as well. So if she is coming across like that to a board of people who KNOW here, how do you think it will come across to complete strangers?
BTW< not on your post, but a general comment, the movie "Fireproof" had to be one of the STUPIDEST MYSANDRIC movies I have ever seen. And anyone who likes it, REVERSE the genders and see if you still like it. That a woman can FLIRT, and come RIGHT to the edge of cheating, and somehow its her WORKING SPOUSES fault that she DID IT, and he has to give up something HE was working for, so SHE could have something is RIDICULOUS.

How you took it is how you took it. If I was looking for a source of Atheistic books, you would be the one, Buddhism, RWS would be the one. I just assumed most people would look to those who follow a topic for ideas on that topic.

Because she is one, that is how she is going to approach it, and as she said, it is not the only approach. The program is voluntary. I do not think all of them will be interested in only Christian material, and she didn't either, since she did ask for other positive message type material. She is doing something to help, in a way she believes will help. Maybe she is creating a niche that did not exist, and may help those who want to try it. I do not think there are zero programs now to help, and this will be the only option, I think she is only adding to the existing programs, offering them a choice. The goal is to help, and that is what she is trying to do, and she is doing it in a way she thinks will work, and she is familiar with. If you were to start a familiar program, I would expect the material to be more in line with your beliefs, and you would use what you are familiar with. I would also think if you asked for suggestions, you would direct the question towards those who you think are familiar with your beliefs.

"Because she is one, that is how she is going to approach it"
And THERE lies the problem with a lot of Christians. THEY are into something, so they think EVERYONE must be into it. And when everyone isn't into it, some of them get upset.

I agree, but we are only talking about a voluntary program that Cassie is trying to start up, and is not upset about at all, in fact, she sounds very enthusiastic about helping the kids. If she was upset about the ones not particpating, that would be one thing, but I just see an enthusiasm for those that choose to participate. Actually I think she went the opposite way on her question, she asked for suggestions from Christians, pretty much saying she understands not everyone is into it. You are right, there is a problem when Christians get upset about others who believe differently, I just did not see that here.

The problem I see, and I have and do work with "at risk" youth, is that by placing the "Christian" label on it, you will turn them away. Children in these programs fall into one of two categories, the already religious, who need no goading to participate in religious things, and the non religious, who will never realte to the Christian thing.
The way to approach it sucessfully is to provide guidance material in a NON christian way, so those that are most at risk can get the positives from the material, without rejecting it off hand because its "those church people".

Hmm. This coming from a...how many times married (etc) guy? I loved the movie (and trust me, at one point I was so mad at that woman...but still a good movie). Let's work on a marriage and try to save it rather than run at the first or 3rd sign of trouble.

Yeah, if I had JUST believed in GOD< maybe my ex wife wouldn't have fvcked anything with feet, huh?
"Let's work on a marriage and try to save it rather than run at the first or 3rd sign of trouble."
Interesting choice of words. "Let's"...LET US. So what did SHE do to work on the marriage? She didn't even work out of the HOUSE, and they had no kids, yet SOMEHOW it was Calebs job to provide EVERYTHING< not only for her, but also for her PARENT.
So what did we learn from that? That a good relationship is JUST like your relationship with GOD, you provide EVERYTHING< he does NOTHING, and it all works out...HUH? That is NOT the kind of relationships I want MY kids involved in.

"That's your opinion and thank God most do not share it."
Actually, most of the REGULAR critics do NOT think it is decent literature. Unfortunately, and you just demonstrated it, those types of literature and movies do not recieve FAIR criticism, because ANY criticism is negated as being "Anti Christian". Good, religious art is POSSIBLE, but in order to do so, one must look at it objectively. "The Green Mile" is a perfect example. Blatant religious book/movie, GREAT writing, awesome acting, etc. So it IS possible, but you have to be honest with yourself and the art to truly see any improvement. The Kendrick brothers, who directed Fireproof, other films (Facing the Giants and Flywheel) are ALSO crap. Why? Because they have a GUARANTEED audience, and recieve NO criticism for the OBVIOUSLY lacking attributes.
Of course, those movies teach that if you have faith in God, everything will work out great. It is called "prosperity gospel", and is COMPLETELY FALSE< and NOT in accordance with your scriptures.

People can always find something to be offended by if they want. A lot of us grow out of it in our 30's and choose happiness. Part of Christianity is spreading the word. Be offended by it if you choose, or accept it, move on and be happy.

I read all Herriot's book as a girl. I think the original "series" was 3 books.. then he has some others outside of that. I'm glad I read this thread and saw the comment, reminds me that I should get them for dd as well. She's an animal nut and she'd LOVE them when she got older!
I also wonder, will have to look, if they ever put the series on DVD? I'm pretty sure the first book was a series on PBS at one point?
I also like "The Saddle Club" series on PBS for girls. Good, wholesome show.

I wasn't offended, just wanted to point out that Christians didn't INVENT morality, and NON Christian works can have JUST as much a positive impact as Christian literature.
Of course, I was completely respectful, did not deride anyone's beliefs, just suggested a different path to the ultimate goal...and I am painted as the bad guy.

I owe you today, refreshing my memory! Yes, this was another favorite of mine as a kid. I was a huge reader. Definitely will add this to my "must buy" list.
I just went and refreshed my memory. The Plague Dogs was the other one I read by him. There's one on Amazon "The ship's cat" that the cover illustration is stunning.. Gonna buy that one too I think just for the artwork.
ETA: I know it's dumb to buy a book for artwork.. but I love the vintage books, by Raphael Tuck? The Adams book I just mentioned reminds me of those big time!!

The library already has books- all kinds of books, albeit within the guidelines of what is allowed. We are going in to physically inventory it and set up a more usable Christian section. NOT all books with be Christian based, but they do need to have a message as that is what the people INSIDE the jail are telling us. On our movie list is Wizard of Oz...I do not believe that is about God?
Problem is gr8dad, you are accusing me of doing the SAME thing you are doing. I miswrote...I fixed it. I was looking for some Christians' opinions because they are Christians and as Christians we believe the same. Just as if I need help as a parent- I am likely to ask another parent. If I have questions about guns, I would probably turn to a gun owner, etc. etc.
However it is quite hypocritical of YOU to assume that I am beating the Bible over the heads of these children and people like me force the others to atheism. That would be like me saying your statements would force nonbelievers to believe in Christ. I respect ALL religions. I am affiliated with a church outreach program this is how I choose to help.
You speak of how I come across, your approach completely failed because you sound no better than you suggest I am. We just so happen to be on different sides of faith.

lol.. Yes, I know what you mean. I was serious, if that's the scenario it explains a TON about some things.. why she defends some things so vehemently, the sanctimonious attitude on some things. Totally makes sense now and confirms something I suspected. Thank you.
Oh, I did read Clancy. When I was consulting in Italy I brought like 6 books with me the first trip. Had them done in no time (nothing else to do there at night in bumfvck italy, lol.. streets roll up at 6pm). So I went to the bookstore in Lecco and they have like one rounder of books in English. I was paying $30 a freaking paperback and my options were Stephen King (read everything already) and people I'd never heard of, or Clancy. So I ended up reading all the Jack Ryan books available at that time while I was there. Loved them!! Never got into Op Center or his other stuff though. I'm a Grisham fan. David Baldacci, big fan.

Swiss Family Robinson is on our list too.
I actually can see gr8's point in regards to "Fireproof" I was MAD at the wife in the movie! She was selfish and seemed to blame her H for everything and here he was fighting to save people every day. Yet that IS realistic. It is like many relationships where someone is often selfish and ma be flirting with someone else while married. I do see that some may feel she acted with no consequences, but her H loved her anyway.
Regardless I have 2 teens who actually really liked the movie. To each their own. I also know many who liked the Left Behind series and others who did not.

ETA: this was a Quick Reply
I think what Cassie is doing is a good thing and I do not see where she is trying to force it on ANYONE.
Yes there is a "captive" audience but it is not a requirement to take part.
AND I would like to know how she is going about it and how it goes as the Juvi here could certainly use something more then nothing which is what they have now. A loving message to those who do not have that is a good corner stone in their foundation because so many children in need do not have many of the building blocks for their foundation.
Atheists are loving and caring people (just doesn't include a God) and given she is including loving messages there is something for all.
I don't see Cassie as beating someone over the head with a bible I see her as trying to help and put something in the library that does not exist now.
Anyone that gives their time to help others is a good thing, especially if they are trying to help children, which is what she is doing and I believe the ages are 12-21 which is not generally the age of coercion - it isn't like they are 6 years old. When I finally finish my schooling my plan is to help children in need and I would like to do something like Cassie is doing in the Juvi where I live. Different view points are always good and if an Atheist wanted to do the same that would be fine as long as it contains a loving message which is the criteria Cassie wants with her program.
Christians do not hold the patten on loving messages.
Maybe you should not read the thread just like your threads that you put a disclaimer on regarding stating the thread may offend Christians - you get upset when Christians comment on your threads after you have put your disclaimer up - Cassie did mention Christian in the title of the post - she was trying to get the information she wanted from the "source" (if you will) for the Christian content she is looking for - she is also looking for loving messages (she did not say it had to be GOD only loving messages) but you ignore that and jump on the Christian part.
There are Christians that do push their beliefs on others just like you push you lack of belief on others - you are no different than those pushy Christians.

Did you read the Prequel to the Ryan series, "Without Remorse"? AWESOME book, takes place in the late 60's, early 70's...and it explains the mysterious "Mr. John Clark"...
I like Gresham, but mostly his NON law books, "A Painted House", "Playing for Pizza" etc.

The Wizard of OZ is based on Atheism. Other critics argue that it is based on JW.

"She was selfish and seemed to blame her H for everything and here he was fighting to save people every day. Yet that IS realistic. It is like many relationships where someone is often selfish and ma be flirting with someone else while married."
The problem I had wasn't with the reality of the situation, it was the APPROACH. If you are married to a selfish person, working harder on the marriage and requiring them to do nothing is NOT the answer. Placing restrictions on what you will tolerate, and yes, floating the "Stop your selfish crap or I am OUT" balloon is the answer.
Personally, I don;t WANT my children involved with a person who places all of their problems and needs on their spouse, and does NOTHING to help fix the situation.

I didn't want to point that out, but you are correct. The "Wizard" is merely a man acting like a god, and the "solutions" to each of the main characters individual problems are found in themselves, rather than in a "deity" that is all pomp and circumstance, but no real power.

Of course, I was completely respectful, did not deride anyone's beliefs, just suggested a different path to the ultimate goal...and I am painted as the bad guy. ---------------------------------------------
Your FIRST response to my posting was---
"BTW, make sure you beat the prisoners over the head with the bible, folks like that make great atheists when you folks are done with them."
REALLY? It is crazy hypocritical of you to suggest that we are beating the Bible into people and that they will make great atheists because of us.
Regardless, I have two children- one who accepted Christ most recently and one who has NOT because it does not feel right to her. She believes in God, but she is still researching and finding her own way. The woman she spoke to- all the kids in her Youth Group- have not made her feel bad about it. They told her she needs to take her time, that God is a gentleman and would not want her to rush into accepting him until she is absolutely ready.
--------------------
You stated you have worked with "at risk" kids. I decided to do this because I want these kids to know that I CARE about THEM. They are NOT just a number to me. I went through the hours and hours of training and I feel like I am doing right by having time with these boys. I am in a max security prison- most there for rape, violent assaults and drug activity- some are there for murder. I just want them to know there is LIFE outside the cell, that the dreams they have- many of them wanting to finish school and go on to college are ACHIEVABLE. After the service I asked them if they had any questions about the message or anything they wanted to know better about God or the Bible. One suggested we have a Bible study so he can understand the scriptures, the others said no...so we talked about life after jail. We are also setting up Life Skills classes to help them with parenting skills, etc. I am learning too. I am not perfect, lucky they haven't expected me to be.

Thank you Annie. I certainly didn't mean for it to come across the way I did and why I issued an apology. I think I was called to work with children, in general, children in prison just felt right. The next few weeks to months I will get a better idea on how/what needs to be done to make this successful. I will share what I can with you!

Keep doing what you're doing Cassie you are helping and care about these individuals =)
I have asked a couple times if you would give me feedback about the program - I would like to do something similar here. Is that possible? ETA - saw the post - THANK YOU =)

I think you are doing a wonderful thing with your time investing it on people who have likely never had anyone show interest in helping them be more than just another statistic. It just warms my heart to know there are people like you out there caring, giving, and trying.

Sure- not every movie has all the right ingredients and I see your point.
The library and having a feasible listening center and Christian SECTION, there will be other non Christian based items in there. I cannot say for sure how it looks and what books exactly are in there as we just started getting it together. The Library has not be used as it should be. I think the youth are allowed to check out books from a list, but the Library itself is not physically able to accommodate the youth currently. We want to get these kids IN the Library so they can use the books, CDs and Kindles within the Library. Right now it is a work in progress and I appreciate everyone's feedback.

ssmom- I appreciate all your feedback. I need to start my own Excel List- there are a TON of great suggestions. We are trying to develop a program to really see what these kids WANT in the Library (within the restrictions). If they are not checking out certain books, we plan to take them out and replace them with something new. We want the kids to be the ruler for what stays and goes in the Library. Again most all of this are IDEAS on paper- we have to actually make it happen!

I ordered videos from them when the boys were little and although they were Christian based, they were good videos that always had a good social message as well...

A lot of Tyler Perry movies have good messages, and I especially enjoy Medea.
My oldest nephew discovered Westerns while in jail.

See, that just shows your ignorance, gr8dad. I was 17 when he divorced his ex-wife and it was because he caught HER cheating on him. I didn't meet him until I was 19. Nice try though.
You got ugly on here before I said what I did...which i why I said what I did (and I acknowledged that when you get ugly, it makes me angry and I say things I shouldn't. I'm sorry for that).

Well, you want "ugly", here's UGLY. Ever think your HUSBAND might have one less marriage under his belt if YOU hadn't been the OTHER WOMAN in the picture? Ohhh, that a little to REAL for you? *******************
#1. Wrong poster.
#2. Totally RUDE and uncalled for.
It is a crying ass shame that Cassie wants to do something good for young "at-risk" adults and a few of you get your panties in a wad because you don't like the subject matter. Get over yourselves, it's not all about you...good gaawwwddd.

I posted TO Christians more specifically because I didn't want this thread to be about religion
------------>if you didn't want it to be about Religion, then it could be opened to everyone. You didn't offend me personally as I am not "anti- religion", but the comment was absurd. As an avid "reader", I read all sorts of stuff... I think what you are doing is a great task and I am sure the Christian kids will appreciate it.

She said something a few days ago about how I must have been the other woman with my husband since I was taking up for an adulterer in the custody forum (or something along those lines). I told her THEN, that she was wrong and went on to say that if I took up for ALL cheaters, then I'd be all up her butt taking up for her since she is a self admitted adulteress. But yes, let's believe a guy that has it in for all Christians...a guy that doesn't know me from ADAM outside this site, a guy she, herself, claims to dislike most times. I don't care if she believes it or not (or him either for that matter...but it would be nice if he admitted he was wrong and apologized for trying to drag my name thru the mud....but maybe it's my turn for a mud bath? lol). I'm not here to garner her love and affection (blech).

The movies were not that good. I was very disappointed in them. Books are MUCH better!
The books are a work of fiction, but they are loosely based on scripture...what alot of evangelical Christians (including Baptists, COG, Pentecost, etc) believe will happen in the end times (Revelations, Isaiah...the prophesies in the Bible), in regards to the Rapture (or "catching up" in the clouds), the anti-Christ, the seals, tribulation, etc. Other sects of Christianity do not believe in the Rapture, some do not believe in the Tribulation and still others...believe that we are already IN the tribulation. My beliefs align more with the Left Behind books based on my own research over the past 15 yrs (not the fictitious storyline with all the characters). I must admit, reading the first Left Behind book when I was 16 or so...got me really interested in end times prophesy. It lead me to other books, and studies and of course...the Bible.
