When I think it can't get worse, it does

My stbx (VA making me wait a year for a divorce) says I can't see my kids at all now. Before he said I could only see them with him present, now not at all. I can't believe he is doing this, especially because of the pain he is causing the children. Meanwhile he continues to be a hoarder, keep a filthy home, and refuse to get rid of the bug problem. And I don't feel the meals he is feeding them are healthy either. And last night, when he announced I could no longer see them, he also said he wished I was dead and the only reason I'm not is there were witnesses. I think he is more unfit than ever.

I am at my wits end. I don't have two nickels to rub together to get a lawyer. I tried legal aid but they won't help me because he talked to the, first. All I ever wanted was joint custody.

I can't see any light at the end of the tunnel anymore. I thought he would come to his senses and go back to talking about joint custody but he never did. I could not feel any more hopeless than I do right now,

You need to file pro se and get a custody order like YESTERDAY. No, It's not easy to do it pro se, but unless you are the world's worst parent you'll be better off than you are now. Start doing some research and get the paperwork in to the court house immediately.

I don't know about VA, but in NJ, if you're nice to the court clerks, they give you all the forms you need to represent yourself and show you how to fill them out. Like Debi said, get a custody order ASAP. The longer you wait, the more it'll look like to the courts that you don't care about your kids.
