[DOES ANYONE HAVE AN ANSWER OR KNOWS WHERE I CAN FIND ONE?? PLEASE...]I am in the process of going through a nasty divorce from my husband, of 7yrs. We have been together for 10. I have been with his daughter, since she was 2. Her mother, because of jealousy is isolating me from her. She is stopping me from seeing her! My Husband?? ISN'T DOING ANYTHING TO STOP HER!! Her mother is Extremely Verbally Abusive. My step-daughter & I, are very close!! In RI, do have any ground to stand on for visitation? My SD sees a counselor, who told both parents it was IMPERATIVE that she & I see each other & maintain a relationship. Her parents DON'T care!! There is little precedent for step parent involvement after a divorce.

I know that in many states now, step-parents have certain rights. I thought RI was 1 out of 10 states, that was explicit about visitation...as long as it was for the good of the child? My step-daughter's counselor (which her mother doesn't always follow through on!!) told both her Mother & Father, it was important for her to maintain a relationship with me.
I also have a son, who is being affected by their actions! He is misses his SISTER!! Her Father is an Alcoholic, who moved out Feb 23rd then moved in with someone May 1st. My oldest Son DIED May 25th 2009, at age 17. I also have an autoimmune disease & have been dealing with that since Feb 2009. In the 2yrs 10mos. after MY Son died & I was sick, my Husband?? Lied, Cheated, & stole $1000,00's...Now he is ISOLATING ME FROM MY STEP-DAUGHTER & SO is her BPD Mother!! :''( PLEASE!! Does anyone know of who or where I can find out MY RIGHTS!! I have an Attorney & a good one (Thanks to my Family) he's away for 2 weeks & it's almost 3 weeks since I've seen her. PLEASE DOES ANYONE KNOW THE LAW IN RI??

SP 'rights' are often at the mercy of the bio-parents. With two active bio-parents I can't see how you can force visitation if neither agree. Sorry for your loss however it won't affect the outcome when you have parents fighting what you desire.

Today, nearly half the states (23) have enacted laws to authorize step-parent visitation. Ten more states expressly granted step-parents rights to seek visitation. Thirteen additional states grant interested third parties rights to request visitation and deem step-parents as fitting within the "interested third party" definition. In the absence of state statutes on point, some courts have held that step-parents may still petition for visitation. Check your state on this right. I know that MI has this and it is granted to former step-parents all the time now.
