Hey all, I'm in CA, and from what I read, that's a bad thing. I've been married for coming up on 15 years and my wife just left me. She told me she's getting an attorney and at this point all I can imagine is that I'm going to be without her and broke.
Is it really as bad as they say it is in CA? I read that after 10 years, it's considered long-term and therefore alimony may be paid until death or until she remarries. Is that really the case in most CA divorces?
I'm sure there's a ton of variables, but just curious what I'm up against. I'll go find an attorney this week - if anyone has any suggestions there I'm all ears. I'm reading this forum as fast as I can.
Thanks,

Sorry.....I've heard the same rumors that California is VERY pro spousal support.
Does she work ? How great is the difference between your salaries ? Do you have kids ?
Try to push for an early end to any spousal support if she cohabitates with a new boyfriend.
Good luck.

To be exact, the state will retain jurisdiction indefinitely for a 10 year marriage. Meaning it's possible you will pay alimony till you die, but not certain. The big variable is your income and her income. Think of adult women as children that need child support but never ever turn 18, that's how California sees them. Not really capable of being adults, yet somehow they get to vote anyway.

Educate yourself. Go to 4320MANAGER.com.
You need to understand the difference in approaches: temporary support (a math formula) and long-term support (a consideration of 14 qualitative factors). These 14 factors are the "variables" that you need to be aware of for long-term spousal support.
You can educate yourself and represent yourself or you can educate yourself and save yourself some time and money if and when you choose to meet with an attorney.

Well, they say more women are attending college nowadays than ever, so with her higher income and assets, you will be getting spousal support. In fact, you should stay home with the kids and get Child Support.

Yep you are screwed...Get a Lawyer...No matter what get a lawyer. I did not and I am still getting ripped off. The system is made for lawyers and you will stand zero chance of a fair trial.
