WASHINGTON (AP) — The scene was a frightening one: A man walked into the lobby of a political organization, assailed the group's work, pulled a gun and opened fire.
But when it happened Wednesday morning at the downtown Washington Headquarters ,only one person was injured: the security guard. And after being struck in the arm, he helped wrestle the gunman to the floor, thwarting an attack that police fear could have turned deadly.
"The security guard here is a hero, in my opinion," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said of Leo Johnson, who was conscious and in stable condition at an area hospital after the shooting.

Are these random shootings a conspired effort to get stronger gun control so Americans are eventually left unarmed?

I don't think they are intent wise from the criminals point of view, I do think they will be used that way by people with their agendas, whichever side they are on....

---> I would say they are more about getting that '15 minutes of fame'.

Floyd Lee Corkins II, the suspect in Wednesday's shooting at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the Family Research Council, was carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in a bag when he opened fire, according to the criminal complaint filed by the Justice Department on Thursday. Corkins, 28, of Herndon, Va., was charged with "interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition"—a federal offense—along with the "intent to kill while armed." The offenses carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for transportation of a weapon, and 30 years for intent to kill. Corkins is expected to make an initial court appearance later Thursday.
Corkins legally purchased the handgun he used in the shooting—a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol—in Virginia last week, the FBI said. A spokesman for the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department said Corkins entered the lobby of the FRC building in downtown Washington at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. He was confronted by a security guard and opened fire.

From ABC News:
Corkins was charged with assault with intent to kill and bringing firearms across state and was expected to appear later Thursday in federal court. Corkins lived with his parents in Herndon and had recently been volunteering at a D.C. community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. He told the guard words to the effect of, "I don't like your politics" and pulled a handgun from his backpack, according to an FBI affidavit. Besides a box of ammunition, authorities also found 15 sandwiches from Chick-fil-A, the fast-food chain that has landed at the center of a national cultural debate over gay marriage. … Corkins' parents told FBI agents that he has "strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner," the complaint says. The assault charge carries up to 30 years in prison and the weapons charge has a 10-year maximum sentence. It wasn't immediately clear if Corkins had a lawyer. The guard who was shot in the left arm, 46-year old man Leo Johnson, is "resting comfortably" at the hospital and is being hailed as a hero by FRC president Tony Perkins, "This hero business is hard work."

ABC news:
A Virginia man opposed to the politics of a conservative lobbying group was indicted Wednesday on charges stemming from the shooting of a security guard at the group’s Washington headquarters. A grand jury indicted Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Herndon, on a federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition and two District of Columbia offenses: assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a handgun during a crime of violence. Charging documents show Corkins was carrying a handgun, a box of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches when he opened fire on the security guard at the Family Research Council’s headquarters on Aug. 15. The guard, who also served as the building’s operations manager, helped to subdue Corkins after being wounded in the arm, authorities said. The Family Research Council has defended Chick-fil-A since the fast-food chain’s president, Dan Cathy, spoke publicly about his opposition to gay marriage. Corkins’ parents told investigators that he was a supporter of gay rights, and he said he didn’t agree with the FRC’s politics before the shooting, according to the documents. It was not clear what he planned to do with the sandwiches.

At a press conference the day after the shooting, FRC President Tony Perkins said his organization does not support the “hate crime” label and said Corkin should not be charged with a hate crime. Federal investigators had said they would investigate the shooter’s motives to determine if domestic terrorism charges were warranted. Corkins was carrying a bag with 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and Traditional Values Coalition President Andrea Lafferty says authorities told her Corkins was carrying a note with contact information for her organization also. Corkins is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.
