My boyfriend has been divorced from his wife of 18 years, would've been 15 had she not dragged her feet. They have no kids, she got what she wanted, the house, she got her vehicle, he got his. He wants to marry me, we have a baby together(not for that reason,we're madly in love with each other). Of course we'll never be able to afford an actual ceremony, we agreed on doing it through the justice of peace. I've had second thoughts because I've heard many horror stories of the ex wife coming back out of nowhere and taking the ex husband back to court to modify/increase support once they hear he has remarried and attach the income of the new wife. Obviously I'd be the bread winner since I have no derranged ex taking my money, was never married before. It would also include if we bought a house together or a vehicle, it'd had to stay under my name only, right so I could protect him? When a marriage is over 10 years does the ex have that much power that if we would marry and he passes away 3 years into our marriage, would she be entitled to everything, his 401K, pension,etc. just because she was in the marriage longer? Also, she's the type of woman that won't ever remarry so she can live off his money. I just think we're better off staying unmarried and stay living in our apartment which is leased under my name only.

Depends on the state you live. You should google your state and alimony based on second spouse. A quick call to an attorney can also give you that information.
